Recruiting Forum Football Talk IX

After sitting with it all afternoon, and now seeing all the social media reaction, this one really hurts. As a big Braves fan, it honestly reminds me of when Freddie Freeman left for the Dodgers.

Tony Vitello wasn’t just a legendary baseball coach; he was an incredible ambassador for the entire university. He showed up at football and basketball games, lived out the Volunteer spirit every day, and truly felt like one of US. While I’m happy for him and the well-deserved opportunity ahead, I’m still heartbroken to see him leave Rocky Top.

Right now, our baseball program is at a huge crossroads (could make the case for DW also). Starting over completely with an outside staff would be a massive and unnecessary risk, jeopardizing the culture, the players, and the recruiting foundation that TV/Elander/Frank Anderson helped build.

It’s clear that the players are behind him; nearly every single one has voiced their support online. He’s been a key part of this program’s rise, and I really hope DW makes the right call: promote Elander and keep the Vols rolling.

Let's go over the evidence that says otherwise.

1. Chris Lowe, hardly a media hack looking for clicks reported today on a Nashville radio station that Tony and DW hadn't spoken in months and he assigned an associate AD to negotiate with TV not even meeting with him personally.

2. Chris Burk and Kendal Rogers, again hardly people looking for clicks, discussed on their show that TV didn't leave to satisfy some desire to coach in the MLB. Both agreed that there is more to this.

3. TV almost took the A&M job last year.

4. When revenue sharing was announced, they took money away from baseball to give to women's basketball.

5. He went for basically less money when considering cost of living and taxes.

6. He abandoned the #1 recruiting class all for that.

Now you can chose to believe that this was all a big nothing burger and unicorn poop and rainbows but I can't make that leap.
Don’t you have to prepare for a Tim Banks flailing ??

Personally I think both parties share equal blame. Maybe DW grew tired of TV asks after he made him the highest paid coach and committed to a new stadium. My experience as a leader is once you met one employee ask, more come as they push the envelope.

TV let Sexton float his name for several jobs (1 right after the NC) then made the “you are either a vol or you are not” at the celebration. Seems questionable to me given what we know now.

Everyone is making a big deal about their lack of communication, wonder how much interaction DW has with other HC. Haven’t seen it mentioned one way or another.

At what point do we question the strength and conditioning staff? I mean good grief it seems like every week we have several players added to the injury list that got hurt during the week, and they’re always out for an extended period of time
It's almost as if they play a full-contact sport or something, 😂

Look at freaking Kentucky’s list dude! It’s 3x what ours is

I have said this several times. I think its a problem.Always somebody hurt

Yes! On both. Next October(1st full week) we get to ride the 50th anniversary graduation float in our Davy Crockett Days parade. Still trying to wrap my head around that🤯
I remember our coaches telling us to remember every minute of every game, because it wouldn't be long til 30 years have gone by and those will be some of the best memories we'd have.

Unless he is a big piece of the foundation the legend was built on. . .
By all accounts he was instrumental in bringing in many of the recruits. I think he gets the job. How often have you heard an AD encourage an assistant to put in for the job? He also stated the players would play a role and we know they love Elander. It might just be lip service but I doubt it is. The AD has to manage the whole athletic department and the reality is that baseball is not a major $ maker. The lady Vols competing for championships is a big deal for the University so investing in them makes sense. We have also invested an enormous amount in baseball. I think our baseball team can compete for a championship this season. It will be difficult to sustain the level Tony achieved but it can happen.

If we’re going to be an everything school, distributing dollars based on weight, football will suffer. Almost need to be heavy handed with other sports and give all the FU money to football like Ohio State to win a natty.
Ohio state is also awful at every other sport. No thanks

Speaking personally, even though football success is what drives the ship, I feel like Tony was kind of the spiritual leader of this post-covid sports renaissance we’ve been enjoying the last few years.

We lost more than a baseball coach today. And I get the feeling that a lot of people agree with me.
Feel like I lost a close friend.
