Recruiting Forum Football Talk IX

Portal needs IMO:

2 safeties
2-3 corners
1-2 OL
2 DT
1 TE
1 QB for depth from low division
1 RB
We need a real LB in the worst way. Find another Pili that isn't made of glass or just full of pure bad luck and let's ride.

He was so freaking good in the limited time he was able to play here...what could have been..😒

I could see this football season spinning in the wrong direction (would be a first real down season for Heupel). Thus, if we loose to the kitties, Oklahoma, and Florida, will minds explode? Of course, I could easily see it go the other way with us winning out and of course, beating the Gatas is always my biggest wish.
I pray not. This fanbase can be relentless. We need to finish this season with at least nine wins. Like I said before the season, I think this staff recognized that they screwed up with recruiting and portal. They would go wback and take some more players.

But this current class is one of the best in the last fifteen years or likely the best and they have recruited way better. We just need to sign this class and hit on a lot of portal players for next year. That is the championship run even with a hard schedule.

I don't see us winning in the Swamp..I don't even know if we can beat Vandy or Okie at home right now..Vandy looks all-around better than us right now.

If our offense doesn't get it's mojo back...we are done.
We don’t lose at home.

UF will be tough but I don’t think their offense gets immensely better by the time we play.

I really did not see Vandy being as good as they've been, I literally thought they would win four games. Clark Lea must be a magician. Candy better hang on to him. Wth all the speculation on coaching moves he has to be high up in those conversations.
Bringing back the most production in the country sure seems to matter

How would fans have a short leash with him if he turned down an MLB job to stay with us?
Because some of our fans are idiots - when something goes wrong they will say he should have left, we would have been better off, blah blah blah.

I love Tony - this is not my take. I was just saying I can imagine some of the wacko fans turning on him (not being focused on this team, etc.)

Johnny called them the "Legions of the Miserable" but Johnny also thought he was bigger than the program, so they probably deserved each other.

What's so bad about the local media, is that for years, all Knoxville sports media had was interlopers that disliked UT and were self-promoting, self-absorbed drama-mongers. Adams, Hyams, Strange, etc.
The typical homerism you get in college towns was completely absent outside the confines of the Vol Network and the local TV affiliate's sports departments.
The Idiot Margin and The LoM is the same thing....I've called them the Idiot Margin for years, but lately I am starting to really think they may not really be the "margin" but the majority. I don't really think so yet, but they are by far the loudest ones and it makes it seem like they are.

We need to be louder than them.

To me, stop playing a walk on and Telander because they are older. Play the talented freshmen and Carter. If Spillman can fit his runs, then he needs less snaps. But he has a lot of potential. Perlotte with some experience looks like he can be a stud. Let him play. And give Harmon more chances. They are better athletes.

Yeah, this team is very resilient. Like we were so close to coming back after the disastrous pick 6. We won't be in a situation that dire again against a team that good the rest of the way.

I know its easy to be down on us right now, but we always beat Kentucky, they're in a tailspin and their horrible offense should help our defense and I wouldn't be surprised if we see them cause turnovers. They won't block us well. Offense doesn't have to do much to get a solid lead.

Night game dark mode against Oklahoma who doesn't have much of a pass game. Literally only Georgia has won in Neyland against Heup. Ole Piss and Pitt in 2021 don't count.

Florida voodoo is real, we do dumb crap on the road and we will have to overcome that. If there's ever a time... its now, when we have a good team and they are freaking coachless.

Vandy in Neyland with playoffs on the line, we don't lose to Vandy.

It's very possible.

October 22, 1988

UT - 38
Memphis St. - 25

The journey from the misery of an 0-6 start to the 1988 football season to four SEC titles and the national championship in the ensuing 10 seasons began Oct. 22 at the Liberty Bowl in Memphis. The Vols had lost at No. 12 Georgia (28-17), to Duke (31-26), at No. 3 Auburn (38-6), and at home to No. 4 LSU (34-9), Washington State (52-24), and No. 20 Alabama (28-20).

There was a major shakeup on the coaching staff after the Washington State game, with the legendary Ken Donahue out as defensive coordinator and Doug Mathews in.

Radio personality Duncan Stewart ended up on a billboard in Nashville and refused to come down until the Vols won a game.

On arriving on the stadium that late October day, the Vols were the object of the obligatory “one-finger salutes” and the other accouterments of life on the road, including a barrage of oranges that got the team’s attention.
“We went to the dressing room before kickoff, and a lot of the guys were ticked off that had happened,” Vol quarterback Jeff Francis said.

After a 10-10 first half, the Vols jumped on the Tigers in the second half, taking a 38-25 victory.

Tennessee head coach John Majors called it, “A terrific win. It stopped the bleeding. This wasn’t the World Series, but I thought we looked a lot like the Dodgers—a lot of nobodies with a lot of heart.”

The Vols scored on four consecutive possessions following the second half kickoff. Those who wanted the ball thrown to the tight end had been granted their wish, with Von Reeves and co-captain Nate Middlebrooks each getting a TD catch.

Tony Thompson, once buried deep, deep, deep on the depth chart, came off the bench when Reggie Cobb was injured and rushed for 124 yards on 28 carries. He scored twice and had a two-point conversion run.

The victory led to a five-game winning streak to end the season, with each game being tightly contested, going well into the fourth quarter before being decided. SEC titles and bowl wins over Arkansas in the 1990 Cotton Bowl and Virginia in the 1991 Sugar Bowl came in the next two seasons. The Vols were 20-3-2 over those two campaigns.

Going from a 5-6 record in 1988 to 11-1 in 1989 was an impressive feat, unmatched in Tennessee football history. There were also SEC titles in 1997 and 1998 and the national championship that latter season.

And what you said in the second paragraph is 100% truth...that's why I say the Idiot Margin is their evil baby. I don't know why we are cursed with such a negative local media...I've never understood it.

I was watching The Sports Source digital networks show hosted by John Pennington from yesterday on YT this morning. It is JP hosting with Marlon Walls, Daniel Hood and Ollie Lane and a few other local media guys talking. I watch them sometimes just to see what the VFLs say and it blows my mind how so much of what they do is critical and being negative about the health and state of the program as whole..when we win, how we win is NEVER good enough, and when we lose it is the end of the freakin world.

I understand these guys want and need to be objective when dissecting game results or predicting our future matchups, but why do they always want to trash the team and the overall health and direction of the program? Like I said, even when we win...it seems like all they do is piss and moan about the mistakes or shortcomings.

I get objectivity...I try to be objective and rational about the games we've played and our hopes for future success this year with the roster issues we have, but I don’t understand the constant toxic negativity about the overall direction and health of the program.
