First 2 series from Rob Lewis:
"Beating Alabama on the road was going to require a special effort and doing the ‘little things’ right.
Tennessee had a nice opening play, Joey Aguilar hit Chris Brazzell for a gain of eight yards, setting up an easy 2nd & 2, a chance to move the chains and get the tempo going.
Whiff.
On the second snap of the game Tennessee turned 2nd & 2 into 2nd & 7 with a false start. The Vols would end up punting after Desean Bishop was stuffed on 3rd & 1.
It was the first time this season that Tennessee didn’t score on its opening possession, and that wasn’t the worst part of the opening sequence.
Tennessee got a great punt from Jackson Ross on 4th down, driving Alabama inside the 10-yard line. The defense got the series off to a great start with Bryson Eason stuffing Jam Miller for a three-yard loss.
Bama faced 3rd & 13 from their own six-yard line, Ty Simpson was nearly sacked in his own end zone, but he bought some time and eventually found Josh Cuevas for an 18 yard gain.
I’d guess that no Tennessee fan anywhere was overly surprised that Bama converted that third and long. It’s been a consistent and mind-blowing theme for this defense, the inability to get off the field on third and long.
I’d also guess that no Tennessee fan anywhere was remotely caught off guard when that third down conversion jumpstarted what would become an 11 play, 91-yard touchdown drive for a 7-0 lead."
The legacy of Hamilton, Fulmer, Kiffin(did you see how his defense folded in the 4th quarter), Dooley, Hart, Botch, Fulmer again and Pruitt.
Havent given up on JH but hard to overcome a quarter century of choking.
