based on my completely arbitrary "feels" I would argue our treatment of the germans wasn't genocidal, but the japanese could be argued as genocidal.

especially as at some point we were directly fighting in Germany, we never made it to Japanese soil.

It's not a number. It's not a %. It's the intent to destroy a group in part or in whole. For example, Israel has been destroying Palestinians in Gaza with the expressed goal of their complete removal from the region. I imagine just about every person in Gaza can say that Israel has destroyed their lives. This peace deal was on the table a year ago. Israel didn't want it.

The US just wanted Japan to surrender unconditionally, which was extremely stupid, but that was the expressed motive all along and then we immediately accepted the surrender.

I believe there was a deal a year or so ago for a cease fire with stepped actions with some hostages to be released in the first phase and then negotiations for later steps. Israel resumed bombing after the first step when the agreement had been for continued discussions.
