I think they did it to quite the fans on which coach to go after. If there retaining Bruce in another copacity the school probably went along with the plan.

They did it bc Bruce didn’t give them any other options with the timing, which was his goal.

Obviously Heupel knows Mac is better than Merk. The question you should be asking is why he isn't playing, or more to the point, it should be obvious there is a reason. I don't think he does that without intent.

I lived in Lubbock for 5 years. Flat farmland everywhere you look. The dust storms are epic. Nothing there but the University. But if you're paid enough to live there, I guess it works for 19 year old kids

I think Heup also doesn't want to insert Mac just for handoff reps behind 2nd string OL either...

He's appeared in 1 game, still potentially got 3 more...rather save those for "must play" situations. I know with the transfer portal using redshirts doesn't really matter as much BUT if a kid comes here expecting to sit his first year (like GMac) then you do what you can to make sure that's not taken from him.

That would be high on my list. That would also explain the focus on getting Merk reps. GMac isn't physically ready and won't be any time soon, so if Joey goes down the only option is Merk.
