Got a construction question for you guys. In my pole barn I'm building, I'm framing up a room that will be 50'L x 20'W with a 10' ceiling, one side will be an exterior wall of the barn. I plan on using the ceiling (loft) of the room for storage, nothing extremely heavy but I'm sure the wife will load it up. Could I get away with either 2x10s or 2x12s on 18" centers as joists for that span or should I plan on using I-joists? Walls will be 2x6 framed for plumbing and electrical.
That’s a louder question.
I read the structure engineer report and build accordingly

depending on the spans for those 2x's either should work fine for general storage. I would just make sure the "flooring" is pretty good. 1/2" or deeper osb/plywood will go a long way to holding up.

the admittedly overly conservative architects answer with wood is you can generally trust a 2x to span a length in feet that equals its depth in inches plus 2. so a 2x10 is going to be trustworthy for 10'+2' =12'.

it will span longer, but just quick/dumb rule of thumb without doing any math. adding some mid span blocking helps too without adding a lot to the system.

* assuming 16" centers for the 2x's.

Thanks. So if I'm reading this right, a 20' span would be to far for a 2x12?

hog, if you go with the double 2x's at 20', make sure you do the blocking. even as a double that long the joist will want to warp and push itself out of true.

I would say you need to do it at alternating 4s or 5s.
ie blocking at 4', 8', 12', 16', next joist over 2',6, 10, 14, 18, back to 4, 8, 12, 16. you should be able to line that pattern up at least partially with whatever decking to secure down at least part of the perpendicular sides.
or 5, 10, 15; 2.5, 7.5, 12.5, 17.5. but good luck getting the spacing to work. I guess there are 5x10 sheets.

I like that rule of thumb.

never heard it before.

I have never had an engineer tell me that. But looking at the charts it fits close enough where I am comfortable because it's on the conservative side.

You could push it to +4 on the bigger pieces, x10, x12 etc. But you get to a point where someone should start doing math and I don't get paid enough for that bs.
