I really appreciate it. I don't even really run a rescue anymore. We've had to stop taking in farm animals, though I still take in immediate needs and network with others to get them safe and taken care of at facilities that can take and treat them long term..
We've added a sick pup my daughter rescued last year and two cats. One was a stray who got kicked out of our neighbors attic the winter before last and "chose" us, and this kitten, they will be ours for the rest of their days. We've been able to float their medical needs. And I really appreciate the gesture but I can't take away from active rescues. Anything you would give me, please put that to work in your community. Find a rescue and volunteer, donate money and gift cards in our honor instead. They need the help terribly.
I don't want to take anything away from active rescues that are taking in, securing and treating the worst cases....... That's how dire the situation is for many rescues right now. Surrenders and neglect cases have skyrocketed. The needs exceed the means. And it kills me that I can't do more!
Long story short my farm extended itself beyond our ability to sustain it financially. When we didn't have the money on hand to treat and meet the needs of our rescues we put it on credit cards. I know, stupid thing to do but I will not let animals go without. My wife lost a really good paying job at about the same time and things spiralled for us. We came close to losing our farm but have recovered and are working to pay off our debt.
The animals we've rescued over the years will have a place here for the remainder of their days. We just can't take on new arrivals unfortunately. That kills me when I know there's so much need but I can only do what I can do. There was a time when our monthly vet bill was around $1100 on average, and that's at a steep discount, our vet was basically giving us meds at cost and waiving their exam fees.
My father who is not an animal person asked me why I do this. I explained to him that I struggle to connect with people, I just prefer not to be around but a select few. But I've always connected with animals. They understand me and I understand them.
