Might be one of the top 10 worst decisions in US history in hindsight.
There is absolutely no way to know what Iran would be like today, but radical theocracy wasn't what Iran was about until we got involved. That was a response to the installation of the Shah.
If we minded our business, Iran might be the most western nation in Asia today, and a strong ally and trading partner. Who really knows?
Wars never really turn out as plans. Both WW1 and American Civil War are great examples as most belligerent thought these wars will be over quick and yet they turned into an ugly mess.Key word: protracted.
Everyone has a plan until they get punched in the mouth. No one punches people in the mouth like United States air power.
When the Chinese people are watching their neighbors get shredded by A10s bbbbbbppppptttt every time they step outside to pee, much less shoot someone, a land invasion becomes much easier.
The only problem is where to put several billion surrendering POWs.
The last war that you can argue the USA was under a potential real threat was WW2. However, threats today are different. Nations can now threaten us anywhere without ground invasions. Iran, if they get nuclear weapons, can put the nuclear warhead on a missile fire it up above our atmosphere and detonate it, creating EMP blast that knocks out the power grid. That is a real threat. But they don't need to be. What was the last time we needed to be good at war or the usa would fall? 1812?
The us being dragged into a war with Iran based in the same 30yr drum beat is senseless. It's idiotic. And its being led by a man who called out how predecessor for being so bad at negotiating that bombs were necessary
But no sane POTUS would deploy ground troops like the Russians are doing in Ukraine. This is why they're using conscripts and North Koreans and such. Ground war sucks. There is no better trained or experienced combat force on the planet right now.
You plug US troops into Ukraine today and it would be a very rough first few months for us until we adapted.
I didn't know a high altitude nuclear detonation had a much larger range for emp pulse until your post. Thanks. The last war that you can argue the USA was under a potential real threat was WW2.
