Everyone assumes that all players just have their hands out, but smart teams are rewarding players they want to keep with new contracts similar to Merk. I know one P4 school that rewarded a productive player from $50,000 last year to 350,000 this year. He never asked, but school knew they needed to step up to keep him. Other schools have offered him more , but he stayed loyal. The same team did the same with their QB and he stayed loyal when UT called him after Nico left.
This same team did this with multiple players before any player asked for more.

It goes a tremendously long way when you are appreciated without having to ask to be shown you are appreciated.

Definitely not all against ranked teams. Northern KY, Indiana St, Belmont are not ranked. We get 2 ranked teams - AUB and Vandy.

Ole Miss, UGa, Vandy, Bama are all 1 game back of Vols in standings and AUB who is 2 games back is ranked #10 in the country and coming to town.

I get how it works. I wouldn’t call it loyalty though. Would he have left if he didn’t get more money? We may never know. But what I can tell you is he hasn’t proven anything for a negotiation.

From now on its rebuilding most every year. Fischer, Kilen, Curley, Bargo, Chapman, Peebles, Russell, Doyle, Phillips are all draft eligible this upcoming draft. Ensley also..

No, my CONCEPT is that HE wasn’t “leveraging”. This is a pro-active stance by the program to get ahead of that. Maybe jmo, but it’s the reality that currently exists. Net result is he’s concentrating on competing for the starting job and/or continuing to develop towards next season if he doesn’t (at least immediately) win the starting nod.
