Recruiting Football Talk VIII

There was a twilight zone episode where lady wanted to lose weight and all her food came to life and she couldn't eat. Lol
I liked the one with Burgess Meredith where all he wanted to do was read books and then a nuclear war happened and he was a lone survivor as well as the library was intact..he proceeded to step on his eyeglasses..lol

People will always complain and want the next thing, but 800k to a GM is another expenditure. The real investment imo should either be in more guys like chop working behind the scenes or better recruiters in certain positions.
Well, if Billy High is, in fact, our GM functionary, I’m pretty sure we don’t pay him 800k. But even if we did, it’s apparently already in the budget.

But I honestly think the money for football is available. If we were actually cash-strapped, Nate Ament would be at Duke. There is zero chance our boosters are shelling out 3-4 mil for ONE basketball player if the football guys were telling them: “We need a lot more money if we are going to take the next step.”

Yep and I just don’t think it will really matter. Too me it’s the same reason that large market franchises in baseball magically have the best players. They have more money. A GM makes sense in the NFL where you have a salary cap but in today’s college game it’s just another expenditure. The difference between Tennessee and some of the larger schools like OSU, Texas, etc is enormous in terms of alumni and wealthy donors. Tennessee is also openly promoting the everything school logo. This spreads out the resources. I personally like being competitive in many sports but understand others only care about football. We are doing remarkably well in this new world but will simply not have the best roster under the current system. Heupel’s ability to overachieve his roster is impressive and is why he’s the perfect coach for us. Super coach who can out recruit others with a smaller budget is fantasy world and will send us back to the abyss in my opinion.

How do we square this circle?

“The football program can’t be competitive, monetarily, with OSU, Texas, etc.”

“The basketball program is increasing its roster expenditures from around $3 million to over $10 million.”

That’s good news. How much roster control does he have?
i have no idea. Tennessee stays pretty tight on info that it allows out. Here is the original article stating that his duties would be similar to his GM position at NC. He is also our pro football liaison.

wonder if that includes the mandated reduction of 2-3? Or even if that matters anymore with all the NCAA rule mysteries..

if accurate, our roster may be like 78-80 players.

According to LWS the current number stands at 77. I think 83 is still the cap for this season.
