Recruiting Football Talk VIII

Take a Valium, it'll be ok.

You've been around a while, this isn't even that big a deal. Yes, we take a step back but playing the game Nico and his handlers wanted us to play gets you burned. So you put the fire out before you get burned worse.

We're fine.

Might not even be a step back. Anyone that presumes to know the future is a moron.

I think we take a step back from last year, breaking in a new QB not completely familiar with system. Breaking in new running back, revamped o line, likely starting a freshman at tackle.

The defense will likely still be stout, but I expect a step back on offense.

As to your overall point I get it, anything could happen. But we're most likely not a playoff team this season.

Nico wasn't too familiar with the system. You have a point with the running backs. We need somebody to step up into dylan Sampson''s place.

We might not not be a playoff team next season regardless of who we have at QB.

This might be the biggest case of overplaying your hand in college football history.

I think Nico will find a landing spot soon, but it won't be on a playoff contender and he'll be learning a new system most likely.

He would have been a draft pick after this season IMO, now I think he'll have to play out two more years in so likelihood.

He definitely ****ed himself. He needs to be his own man and stop letting the guys around him control his destiny.

Would be funny if he doesn't end up with as much money because no one is willing to pay what he asked for and he devalued himself below what he earned here.

With Nico I think 10 wins was in play for sure, that should get you in. But sure anything could happen.

And I agree, we schemed around both Nico and the o line last year.

And the way things played out I wonder how much of Nico's struggles with the offense were due to his lack of commitment to the game itself and or our offense.

I think this is likely actually. I think we would have had him around 4 million with achievable incentives factored in.

I think he'll get somewhere between 1.5 and 3 out of the portal.

I think our administration laid a trap for him knowing he was seeking deals elsewhere to check his commitment. I think we offered a fair deal meeting in the middle and have him a path to earn more with incentives.

He countered and then attempted to play hard ball by sitting out. And we knew he was shopping around so we cut bait and quit playing a losing game.

Scary since our offense was pathetic in many games.

Avery Johnson could be something in our offense. Seems like a pipe dream to me though. I’d be cool with Haynes King if you could get it done somehow. Still probably a stretch

I like Luke Altmeyer at Illinois. Started off at Ole Miss, and seems like a perfect fit for Heupel’s offense.

Initially wasn’t impressed by just looking at stats. Have since watched some highlights and he is decently mobile and looks like he can throw well enough to make plays. I’m coming around on him, does seem the type to fit our system potentially

Could be they have a line on a QB that's actually worth the top QB money....Nico wasn't.

You usually aren't this dense...do you really want them to way overpay a guy just because he pitched a fit? He was being payed very well commensurate to his actual performance...imo he was already overpayed...he sure didn't deserve being in the top 3 highest paid QBs
Funny, I think the rest of you are being dense suggesting a portal QB who has only summer camp to learn the playbook is worth $4 mil. I haven't been suggesting we cave and give Nico the money. I've been suggesting we stick to our guns and not overpay for a guy from the portal. If we were unwilling to give Nico $4mil, we don't need to throw $4 mil at a portal QB.

I have zero problems with cutting ties with Nico. He tried to extort the program. But let's all realize, he's not getting dropped because he lacks talent, he's getting dropped for being cancerous. He played well enough to get us to the playoffs in his first year starting. Everyone on here was talking about how he would develop going into next season. And there was every reason to think he would. One of the few highlights of the OSU game was him cracking his helmet, then going right back out there to play. So if we weren't going to pay him $4mil, I don't think we should be saying it's okay to pay a portal guy $4 mil. Save the money for Faizon Brandon.

So many of you seem to be missing my point. Or you just want to pay the next guy, no matter how he plays here, $4mil, just to say eff you to Nico. FFS, there's no need to overpay for a guy IMO. Worst case scenario we just roll with Merk. The only way I'm on board with $4mil is if it is somehow incentive laden, which my understanding is currently illegal. The last thing we want to do is pay $4 mil to a guy who comes in and under performs.

He is being extremely dense today
You need to stop with the insults unless you want insults lobbed in return. Not my fault you guys seem to be missing the point of why pay any QB that's only going to be here 1 season $4mil when they've proven nothing in our system. Y'all seem to want to throw money callously around while complaining about paying players to begin with. It's not smart money management.

Hendon did pretty freakin well..and I know he had spring getting backup reps, but the point remains.
And if we had picked up a QB right after the season, then maybe they'd be worth the money, but we didn't. And Hendon Hooker type players don't come along every day.

THIS.

We lost our starting qb because someone leaked a rumor of a contract negotiation.

It doesn’t get any more fragile than that. Can’t believe we continue to fumble the bag and the management of our undeniably most important program.
My guess is Danny White is on the warpath, because he has repeatedly said how much he HATES leaks. The leak itself never should have happened. And I doubt we ever get to know who the culprit was. But I hope whoever it was no longer has a career involved with Tennessee sports.

Are you serious? The leader of our team isn’t here because he missed practice and meetings. He may have received bad advice, but he chose money over his teammates and over the University that went to bat for him. At this point, he was nothing but a cancer:
Still, the leak that started the ball rolling never should have happened. And reports seem to suggest DW is pissed about it. He HATES leaks.
