The Atlanta Braves

Marcell not being able to play LF definitely factored in because he would sit days where most other catchers that can hit would DH some too.

I don't understand why they were fine with Soler in the OF but not Marcell. Like Marcell isn't any good but he is better than Soler even with the arm completely shot.

Lol why would it matter if Contreras would agree to an extension? He had/still has years of control

AA has talked about how important cost control and knowing the cost year by year is to him. He has brought up in most of his interviews when asked about his approach. I don't agree with it, but I think they preferred Murphy's controlled cost over six-seven years and not knowing what Contreras would get in arbitration for 3-4 years.

They are to the point where he should definitely be standing out there. As you said, Ronald will need some DH days anyways, so might as well do it

If (we are) nickelin’ and dimin’ to avoid higher arb we are so screwed lol

we are so unserious, like when we went to bat over 500k for Max during arbitration

Either way, they need all the bats they can get in the lineup. Having Kelenic/De La Druz for two months with Profar gone is going to suck

Profart sans the cream and the clear is gonna be so not fun lol. Bro amassed a -0.3 WAR in four games ON the stuff

It's why the Kelenic move (which I defended at the time, even though I did not know the full scale of the money that cost) was so weird and unlike anything he's done. He could have Teoscar for the same exact price for one year and instead took a $27M luxury tax hit for a guy that had proven little.

What's funny is, they talked about how confident they were they could unlock Kelenic, it didn't happen because he's just not a good hitter, and then they fired the same guy they thought could fix him less than 12 months later.

Flowers/suzuki etc types weren’t making $73 million

TDA played because the $73 million dollar man wasn’t performing. This is a different scenario. Baldwin should be play everyday somewhere
How much Murphy makes is irrelevant. When the 73 million dollar man was the best hitting catcher in the national league in 2023, he and TDA still had roughly a 60/40 split. And that's with TDA missing a month from an injury in mid April.

Every single season AA has been GM, we've had 2 solid catchers that split the workload. Facts are facts.

Arbitration was still a vastly superior option. The likelihood of Contreras ever reaching in Arby what Murphy averages annually is was pretty unlikely. And in the low chance he did, well then he's the best catcher in baseball and that's a good problem to have.

I think the defense was the kicker. Which is dumb because Milwaukee turned him into a really defender in like 1 off-season. Granted they supposedly have a reputation for doing that, but it's still more of an indictment on our coaching if we couldn't teach him the same thing.,

To add to that, if Murphy catches fire and has 10 homers over the next month and an OPS north of .900, I guarantee you that Baldwin will still be getting 2-3 starts a week. That's just what we do.

If he’s hitting and Baldwin is still up here then they are just dumb

AA not being able to project the market and not even attempting to go after a guy like Harper in 2019 makes me physically ill.

If you want to hear something that actually SHOULD make you physically ill....

The Braves traded Mark Teixeira to the Angels for Casey Kotchman and Stephen Marek. When he signed with the Yankees the following off-season, the Angels received a comp pick. With that comp pick, the Angels drafted none other than Mike Trout.....

Dumb or not, the Braves like to split the workload at catcher. It's just how it is. And it's worked pretty well over the last decade plus.

I would rather have Baldwin in Atlanta, ideally getting reps at DH or 1b or LF when he isn't catching. We need to field the best 26 man roster that we can. And Baldwin is one of the 26 best players in our system.

Baldwin is an incredibly talented player that is not immune to being stunted by this organization’s ways. His development is not complete. He needs game action, bad. Send him down.

Just got a ticket (well 2, but that's what I had to get*) for Wednesday. I wonder if they'll let me get 2 bobbleheads
