2025 Transfer Portal Thread

The judge in the House vs NCAA case said she was not going to issue a final ruling today. There are 14 people there to object, mostly on Title IX grounds. The current administration has already said they won't pursue Title IX issues with this settlement, and that they didn't think it applied here. However that wouldn't keep the judge from making a ruling on it. If she doesn't change her mind and allows the settlement to proceed, 15 scholarships/15 roster cap/revenue sharing or 13 scholarships with no roster caps goes into effect July 1st.

…wish we would spend our way to the final four
Hard to do that when you care as much or more about football, which obviously we do, and are seemingly having the same troubles with the transfer/recruiting market there.

I’m amazed at our ability to be an everything school in this environment. I think about it and wonder, what would we have to let go of to get a championship team in football. Or basketball.

That, and next year has a greater chance at Rick leaving. Only saying that because we’re gonna see if RB will love having a team that’s mostly “not his” if that makes sense.

I think it would be great to spend out of our ass for one season and send RB the correct way.

I don’t want him to leave next year, but you never know how he’ll enjoy having a team that’s mostly from the portal.
He had 3-4 starters this year that were transfers. Think he’s fine with it.

I wouldn’t be surprised if there’s a battle for booster money and not enough to go around given our everything school status.

And I wouldn’t be surprised if this is the thought process: When you look at bball vs football, the investment needs to be made in football most, no debate needed. Rick Barnes is a good enough coach to do more with less. Maybe they are playing things real tight and airing on side of spend less on Rick in favor of football and the next bball coach whenever that day comes (which I think we all expect is a sooner rather than later likelihood).

Yeah, but Clayton has been there for 2 years. I don't think that statement (from Rothstein) is necessarily an argument against any transfers, it just states that it is preferable to have a group who plays together for a significant amount of time (more than 1 year) to build cohesion.
That's a classic Barnes type team.

Strong chance they'd be granted a temporary injunction as most any athlete could prove direct/immediate financial harm if they tried to exclude them. This would likely mean 6 figures for hundreds or even thousands of athletes they'd try to exclude.

2024-25 is the first four-year senior class to miss the free Covid year of 2020-21. If the NCAA creates a fifth year of eligibility and doesn’t apply it to this class, they would stick out as the only class since 2021 to not receive five years. I figure that would make it easier to get the injunction. It makes it harder for the NCAA to argue that a class would feel wronged regardless of when the application of the fifth year starts. It would literally be just this class that doesn’t benefit.

I think with Gillespie coming in, having ZZ back would create issues unless it’s been addressed with both prior to G signing. Now Gainey, I would pick him out of the 3 to come back because he became a very good 2 and we need that and he’s good to be a 6th man. He would be the better fit of the 3. Mashack as a role player would be good. I love ZZ but how do you fit him and G unless G is ok to play some 2?
I don't think Barnes has two sets of keys and we all know that he gave the keys to Gillespie------that should answer the question about ZZ coming back

Ehhh... Not so sure that is true currently based on how many guys in the portal we've passed on, gotten outbid and didn't counter, didn't even go after, etc... We have plenty of need in several positions, and yet we seem to be good with spending the min grabbing a few bargain guys here and there and just ride with who we have... A LOT of inexperienced players are going to need to step up in a major way this upcoming season...
Looks like we are not taking that/ wanting to take that last step to get to the championship level like other programs are doing in terms of spending for portal talent. We seem to now have the mentality of 8+ wins are good enough and that's what we'll finance... All while ticket prices, concessions, etc. continue to go up.

Several kids with zero eligibility left have entered the portal. There will be lawsuits for some of these kids for that 5th year.

Gainey and his dad are the only ones that have overtly said they are waiting for a clear signal on the fifth year. That doesn’t mean ZZ wouldn’t come back, but Gainey believes he can make money and improve his future destination by staying. While a lot of people on this forum claim a clear timeline and understanding of when/how the fifth year discussions will shake out, people close to the situation remain unclear. It’s a mess. After the NCAA takes a position, the conferences have to follow. I think players like Gainey just want a signal telling them likelihood and timeline so they can make a decision. The longer it takes, obviously the less likely that anyone stays. Our staff is operating as though it won’t happen or won’t happen soon enough, but obviously they’d keep the door open for a player like Gainey if they hear signs of a clear future for the fifth year. They are not going to hold spots when good players are available.
Thanks for some clarity as usual.

Well, UF's best player and arguably the reason they are in this thing is a transfer so there's just as much merit to me on what you can actually bring in in the portal vs. retention. I think the retention argument is more coincidence, but a mix of both is good.
All three of their starting guards are portal gets.

Hope I'm wrong, but how does this work with fitting in Ament at the 4? Feels like not much room at all.
IMO Ament would be a nightmare matchup at the 3 position. His films show he is quite comfortable beyond the 3pt line and can put the ball on the floor and slash too. His height and scoring ability would give other 3s fits.

Hadn't thought of that, but it's a fair point to consider.
