The Official Texas A&M @ #1 Tennessee Series Thread (Fri. April 4 7PM EDT ESPNU) (Sat. April 5 Doubleheader SECNET+)

I doubt theyd care that much. There are several schools absent from various sports outside of football and basketball.

Pivoting to a related topic, the House settlement could be a big moment for baseball tomorrow. I would not be surprised at all if in reaction to that settlement some northern based teams let it go as cost savings.

Link?

Well its my opinion so no link for that. But my opinion is based on my years in higher ed administration and the contacts I have (mostly Big Ten and Big East). Here is a link discussing potential impacts on track and field.

Heres also article about impact on Ohio State which i believe is second in revenue to Texas. If this is Ohio State talking this way, imagine if you are Pitt, Syracuse, Kansas State…

I respect your opinion, of course. The reason I asked for the link was simple. I was unaware of a congressional hearing on the matter. That said, every university has to decide what sports to invest in and be Title IX compliant.

I’m glad you pointed out the articles.

I’ve given this subject much thought as it pertains to baseball, maybe not as much as it relates to track.

I have no clue what track at Oregon generates, for instance. Maybe Mizzou is really great at track and I have no clue, I dunno. The NIL thing is a way to spread the wealth around and if your point is Coaches in Football, across the board, get paid too much, I agree. Then we get into market value based on accomplishments. What does Kim Caldwell make and how many people are in the stands, or Tennis, Track, Golf, etc…I don’t have the answer.

If the point is Mizzou should get rid of baseball, Vandy gets rid of football, and we get rid of rowing, etc…I’m not for that and it’s complicated. The easy answer is pay them all what Nico makes, but that’s not realistic is it? I appreciate you pointing the hearing out, but any change in the system is probably years away.

It will be a complex equation for sure and its going to depend on a multitude of factors: private money (Track at Oregon for instance is untouchable due to Phil Knight and they are successful--just won womens indoor natty), number of sports currently offered, Title IX numbers. etc. I think increasingly in the north especially you will start to see a real consideration of competitive nature factor into keeping programs. Cleveland State is non-P4 but they recently cut several programs that included womens golf and softball in part due to their competitive posture.

Kentucky is one I have my eye on in the SEC. Not a huge money school in the same way Texas, Florida, Texas A&M are.--but they sponsor 22 sports (combining indoor/outdoor track teams as one), whereas Texas sponsors 19. That is going to be hard to justify given their competitive positioning in the SEC.

You seem to be kinda focused on track, not pigeon holing you, so if I’m off feel free to say. Maybe a WVU grad or resident? That doesn’t matter.

Let’s start here. What happens if Title IX got repealed? Now each school gets to decide. Are we gonna fund all the sports equally? I think most people agree that women and men should have the same athletic opportunities, seems an outdated idea by now, but I don’t know how ya do it and ya can’t predict which sport, Men’s or Women’s gets hurt.

I also realize that the NCAA is blamed for everything that ills college sports while not realizing the universities make the rules and the NCAA is charged with enforcing them. I’m not saying, the system can’t be changed, but the money is ridiculous. The kids draw people to the seats, the coaches are getting paid life changing money, UT is increasing enrollment to the tune of, “we can’t house them”.

I think your point is regarding fairness. It’s never gonna be. Back in the day I read Death to the BCS by Pete Thamel, it changed the way I look at college sports, well that, and it’s just a game at the end of the day.

I really do appreciate having the conversation.

GBO!!!

Not track focused, just thought that and the Ohio State article are good pieces that articulate the situation. WVU and UT graduate, not a resident.

I don't think anyone will go away from the principles of Title IX without a bi partisan political consensus. The Trump administration hasn't chimed in yet (al best I don't think they will repeal but just not use resources to enforce) but I think its reasonable to assume at some point in the future we will have a Democratic administration that supports Title IX. So schools aren't going to go away from it, only to them have to comply with it again.

My point about baseball, and the article about track, is just that a big shake up is about to occur where you could see several schools opt out of sports for financial and competitive purposes.

Nah, I’m over the 3B dugout. I had “Swing the bat!” followed immediately (with the next batter) by “It’d be nice if you’d take a pitch every once in a while.” With a “Bring it down, Nate, everything’s high!” and “Get your head out of your butt” thrown in for good measure. The guy was clearly more knowledgeable than any of our coaches and more talented than any of our players; I guess he just had the day off from his own high-level coaching job.

Ahhh, well, I hate knowing it was just as bad over at 3B. Sounds similar to the clown we had at 1B.

Good grief. All one person or multiple?

On our side, it was 2 different guys. The "WAKE UP!" guy absolutely turtled up and shut his mouth the rest of the day.

The other guy had chirped all afternoon and got louder when Nate hit his rough waters. "OH SURE, NOW YOU PULL HIM! BEEN TERRIBLE ALL DAY" or something close to that is what got the dugout and all of us around him heated. Proceeds to argue with every single person that talked to him. My understanding was Ensley's dad and a couple other parents eventually lined him out.

I walked out of the first game with a couple of siblings of players and they were pretty POed too.

It won't happen any more in our area, I know that much.

The last sentence. Good! And Thanks!

I wanna know more about this. Not in a gossip kind of way, but it came up in the game thread and it was hard to tell if it was a person or a group. A few people agree, get rid of em, others said Tony shouldn’t have responded, but I wasn’t there…It’s pretty rare for a coach to get after the fans, especially one quoted as saying he wants a hornets nest.
Yes I stood corrected. Bc I thought it was just a dumb fan chirping in general. As I said on Sat, I should have waited to hear the deets.

There is ZERO PLACE FOR NAMING PLAYERS IN A NEGATIVE WAY OF ANY KIND!

Now the zebras ...

I think the stadium should add a new policy. You disparage VOLUNTEERS (athletes, staff, volunteer staff, other fans), you're gone. Put up a NO FLY LIST as well. Alcohol is involved 99% of the time.

And just think we get to play 4 of those teams on your screenshot. SEC is just brutal and to think you can go thru it and not have an off day is idiotic.
No doubt off days will happen, but I definitely don’t see an off day to that extent for the rest of the season. A&M happened to have their best day of the year and we’ll see how well they hold up consistently when they go to LSU and Arky. I’d be willing to bet we don’t see that again from them.

I would not be on the wrong side of these Dads, defending their son, off the top of my head; Snead, Ensley, Bargo, Chapman, Phillips, Payne.
And the Mommas? Whew!! I want every Vol Momma to have my back.

Going after parents and family is just as bad as going after the player. As families, the investment is massive. Most playing baseball since little bitty. Travel by car, by plane, gas, food, spending money, hotel, tailgate, time off work, all the attire and accessories. And most have other children in sports...Every weekend. Parents drive up to 11 hours. North Dakota, Omaha, Virginia, Florida, Colorado, California.....it's disrespectful on all levels.

Do the opposing players and families make the same investment?

Not related to the discussion, but-

Man, I met Marcus' dad on his first trip down this year back in the early season. That guy was awesome. We talked in line together for about 5-10 min and I was ready to invite their whole family over for dinner. I'd hate to see the person that gets on his bad side.

But we want a hornet’s nest for them, don’t we?
There's a big difference when opposing fans are heckling your kid and when people who are supposed to be there to support them are telling them they suck. Of course the players and parents expect to hear some unfriendly stuff in an opposing stadium, but when your own home crowd turns against you? Come on.

I realize not everyone is this way, but I would also personally never attack the family of an opposing player, and I'm not going to yell super nasty stuff at an opposing player. A hornet's nest can be loud, boisterous, distracting, etc., and not be just downright a$$holes.
