I’m not sure if you’re referring to Tugler or Roberts, but either way seems a bit unrealistic to think that’s the type of production we’ll get out of Carey. Both of those guys are elite in something. Tugler was a NDPOY finalist.
I don’t think expecting him to be that is fair, but I do think you can look at him as a body type that we don’t have and a style we don’t have and also acknowledge he put up better numbers than our other bigs in 2/3 of the number of minutes those guys played. Maybe he turns into a Houston type guy, but dismissing him because he’s 6’8” when arguably our best post of the last decade was 6’6” seems a bit foolish to me, but jmo

Hope he comes of the bench and takes over for both Ament (if we land him) and Okpara throughout the games.

That’s probably close to 15-20 minutes a game.

Ament is particularly light for his frame and height, but we see him at the four primarily. Obviously we use the four in different ways in different lineups and matchups. He has a nose for reading defense and scoring no matter what he’s given. Great to see the instinct to read quickly at that height. He has a quick release or action to drive. The risk is a Julian Phillips scenario where he doesn’t really come into his own in time to take over a game before he leaves.

I think many are underestimating Carey’s contribution at both ends. Bigs hate playing against a guy like Carey. He’s very physical with his lower body and makes you pay if you go up in traffic or fight him for a rebound. He has better footwork on offense than any of our bigs, except JP. He clears space, but also has the footwork to score beyond putbacks. He’ll be a great fit.

About 50% or better of On3’s top 20 last year were significant impact players. So hoping Ament is another if we get him

Well, I stand corrected. I think my opinion of him as a 3 still stands but this rationale is certainly compelling.

Hope we have a reason to be talking about this in November

I love how you break down his game and after watching his videotape and recalling how he played against us he certainly passes the eye test.

My hot take…

If he’s going to cost what it looks like it’s going to cost, and that severely limits what else we can add, I would prefer we pass. Much like what you said in your last sentence I definitely have a fear that he’s not sure fire dominant good, he doesn’t have the deal Flagg came in with, it’s as you mentioned more Phillips like but taller. Obviously if we land him I’ll hope to be wrong, but I just have that fear given his build, he also hasn’t been dominant in the last year against quality competition, and then our history with 5 stars and Barnes also.

Now if Pratt is willing to fund this campaign and Ament is saw as gravy on top of other pieces then I’m all for it, but if he keeps us from adding other all league type talents I think I would rather add 2-3 proven guys over just Ament.

Where the Ament optimism coming from? IF we land Carey today that’s a potential lineup combo in the post of Okpara-Carey. That’s A LOT of offensive rebounding, and he is a guy that can go get a bucket in the paint. I would rather have a stretch 4 out there, but can’t complain if Okpara-Carey-Gillespie are 3 of the 5 starters next year.
It’s all opinion. Igor was a stretch that declined as the season progressed. I like the idea of winning in the paint with rebounds.

Between him and CP, opposing bigs would definitely know the played a basketball game. Okpara and Estrella are no slouches in terms of physicality and hustle either.

My ideal finish:

Gillespie, Rice, Pozzato, Atwell, Carey.

Ament if we can avoid a Julian Phillips situation where his development becomes the storyline of the season.

Room for another long big or combo guard. Maybe a high potential type that didn't produce a ton as a freshman or sophomore. Or an MJ Collins type.

So, as things stand right now, this is what we’re looking like for next year’s roster, correct? So, 4 open roster spots right now. Feels like all 4 need to be impact players if we want to be a top-end roster again. That’s a lot of unproven minutes on the bench right now.

PG: Jakobi Gillespie
SG: Open Slot
SF: Open Slot
PF: Cade Phillips
C: Felix Okpara

Bench: J.P. Estrella
Bench: Bishop Boswell
Bench: Amari Evans
Bench: Troy Henderson
Bench: DeWayne Brown
Bench: Open Slot
Bench: Open Slot

If 15-man scholarship rule is enacted:
Bench: Kennedy Okpara
Bench: Open Slot

Igor disappeared more and more as the season progressed. On offense, he was a bust and on defense he was a bust. Very disappointed in his performance all year.
