2025 Transfer Portal Thread

Bingo.

This ROI is the dumbest **** ever. You have a HOF coach that can coach those guys up.

Spend the ****ing money. Tired of this ****.
Same here. Plus our coach is in the last years maybe even YEAR of his career and we have no sense of urgency. I’m not trying to whine and complain but the whole thing just doesn’t make sense. Don’t we want to go all in for a coach who’s close to retiring???

Ok but if we take money from something else to get more out of basketball you're going to see a decline in whatever we take money out of. I personally agree that more money should be put into basketball but not everyone thinks so, there's always going to be someone that complains or finds something wrong. Gonna have to come to terms with the fact that NIL is changing the landscape of college athletics and adaption is a must.

I'd much rather spend it on basketball. This is definitely pessimistic, but after the Ohio State football game...what's the point? It's so much more expensive to field a championship football team than basketball. You don't have to be the largest spender in basketball to compete for a championship, just smart with your $. Landing 1-2 guys like Knecht (if they exist) can carry you. Lanier was an excellent pickup as well. Football will never get there. Evidently Barnes and staff can find these players...give him what he needs to bring in who he wants.

I’m fine with losing out on McKneely. Is he a good player? Absolutely. But that’s not the reason for my reaction or disappointment. We just seem so far behind and i’m sick of hearing ROI or “they gotta buy into the culture or take less money to play for us” That will never work long term. As much as it sucks from a fan POV with the sport is being slowly ruined with NIL, it’s literally pay for play! no questions asked. Just seems like we either don’t get it or are too stubborn to adapt.

"just spend the money" from message board posters is always funny. The money has to exist first. With NIL money, it has to be donated or given by someone. With football and basketball, I'm sure we're spending all we've got currently. Villanova and Louisville and Kentucky don't have football teams to fund or care about. "JUST SPEND THE MONEY" on basketball probably means an 8-4 level of football roster for us, which isn't going to happen.

All about the cash

If it's a choice between the two, football wins. More big money boosters support football than they do basketball. It's the Doug Dickey mentality. Football is king.

Knecht was not the hottest name in the portal or anything close to it. He was identified and scouted really well, and we also got lucky that he turned out way better than anyone imagined. That's what we're going to have to do - identify talent that isn't the hot name everyone wants.

UT is a football school first tho, so football is gonna be top priority. We can argue about it as much as we like, doesn't change the fact the most important sport in the SEC is football and UT's top brass is never taking money away from football to fund another sport

All in on Gillespie and hope ZZ and Gainey can come back. Hopefully, the in coming class shows some promise

Best case scenario now?

It’s more than the Doug Dickey mentality. It’s the American Mentality. Football is king. Football generates far more money. Football provides more bragging rights. Like it or not, it’s better business to be a Football School.

Seems like history, English, and criminal justice are the common undergraduate degrees I hear about with students hoping to attend law school….just sayin.
Political science, as well.

After I got to law school, though, I realized algebra was important. Not that you use actual algebra, but the type of thinking is algebraic. Philosophy is another one that helps.

I am working with a family right now where the young man really wants to go to Arkansas. He is from there. It was all set, but then another school just stepped in and offered money that as his dad put it (paraphrasing, even though I am using quotation marks) "is more money for one year of playing a game than I made in my last 30 years of my career combined". It really is crazy for some of these kids.
Only a very small percent of college players makes it to the next level so it's understandable how this happens

Fair enough. If Gillespie goes to Nova, then we should probably all expect the 3 seniors back.

Disappointing if that ends up being the case.
Man in no scenario am I disappointed if the three seniors come back. I’ll be disappointed if we strike out in the portal bc I don’t expect the fifth year things to be passed, not in time for them at least. But if we end up with Z, Jahmai, and Gainey back I’ll be thrilled. I’ve been kind of bummed thinking about the team being mostly one year rentals next year. Plus, those guys just had the best two year run in program history!
