Canada is threatening to turn off the lights.

"Michael Patrick Leahy, CEO and Editor-In-Chief of The Tennessee Star, said he believes President Donald Trump’s calls for Canada to become the 51st U.S. state is a negotiating tactic in disguise that will set up the U.S. in a position to take control over Canadian territories north of the 60th parallel to fortify the area with defenses in the event of Arctic incursions by Russia or China.

Reacting to Trump’s renewed calls for Canada to become the 51st U.S. state Tuesday during an interview with Fox News on Tuesday, Leahy said he believes the president’s “endgame strategy” with Canada is to seize the nation’s northern territories – Yukon, Northwest Territories, and Nunavut – stretching from Alaska to Greenland.

Leahy is calling the gambit Trump’s “Northern Flank Strategy.”

“If Canada were a 51st state and if they had voted in 2024, who would they have voted for? Probably 75, 80 percent of them would have voted for Kamala Harris. That doesn’t work politically in America. Not at all. It would have a huge electoral college impact, and I don’t think that’s what Donald Trump is really after here. I think this is a negotiating tactic. What does he really want? He wants what I call the ‘Northern Flank Strategy,’” Leahy explained.
"
Or.......... He is just a bombastic blowhard.

I think everyone knows Canada being the 51st isn't likely to happen... Trump is angling for something else like rare earth minerals from Canada to Greenland and military strategic location near the north pole.
Canada, should be happy to help the U.S. establish a military presence in the Artic. When I look at Canada's military, they couldn't stop much at all. They have always ridden our coattails for protection. Their history of military spend in relation to GDP is pathetic.

during WW1, no nation had as many accusations of mis-treatment of POWs as the Canadians did, despite being a minute fraction of the total number.

they pretty much never cooperated with any of the "gentlemen's truces" during the war.

at one point they heard the Germans complaining about a lack of food. so they threw over a couple cans of food. They heard more Germans join that part of the trench asking for more food. so that time the Canadians threw over cans of food...with live grenades in them.

they also had a tendency to make pipe bombs during the war, and one of their favorite tactics was to bury the germans alive in some of the "safe houses" instead of taking them prisoner.

they used similar tactics in WW2. they would "lose" some equipment, boxes of medical goods was a favorite. the germans never had enough stuff so they always scavenged. well the Canadians booby trapped a good number of them. Sometimes just at the site, so when a soldier picked it up, it all went boom. but sometimes they were real sick effs, and booby trapped an individual box, putting a false bottom in so that when the last piece of medical gear in the box was taken out of the box, it exploded. in the hospital. most likely hitting a doctor/nurse type.

beyond the borderline war crimes, they were always known as tough fighters. Kicked our ass the last time we invaded them.

they are nice to civilians, but you don't want to be fighting them.

Likely isn't even an option.

We will never take mineral rights from them.

Trumps a dbag for all of this.

If he's playing coy then stop. Say what you want. He's not some brilliant master strategist.

If he gets more out of Greenland it will only be military presence. Which he would have gotten anyway. They aren't dumb. They see us pulling back from Europe. They'd like to be still covered by us.

Yea, what I was saying essentially. Maybe another base. Maybe some sort of “agreement” on mining. They ain’t handing over mineral rights…

As it is with most other NATO nations relative to ours. That’s why it’s time for them to open their ****ing checkbook.

If we were going to have one "smaller" nation ally on our side I would want the Canadians.

and they would be one of the last developed nations I would want to invade.
Canada is suffering from the same issues we do in the US, only it's much more highly magnified there.

The population centers are completely out of touch with rural Canada. Rural Canada is much more like the type you mentioned in earlier, self sufficient, dependable. The majority in population centers are much more liberal leaning socialist.

Canada is basically 4 large cities. Not enough non metro population to offset.

Correct a little more than 25% live outside the main population centers.

They are not the same people you were speaking of from times past. And that's exactly why the issues between rural and metro Canada are much more magnified. The 25% produce beef, oil etc for the rest. And they are completely crapped on. They are taxed at about 50% of everything they make with next to none of the government resources they pay for.

The people I know, from two families one ranchers, the other oil field workers hate the Canadian government and the direction of the country.

And don't forget Quebec, which consider themselves as a separate Canada.
