'26 TN TE Carson Sneed (Tennessee commit)

i'm at a loss.

it's really quite mind boggling how we dont consistently land more top 100 kids. maybe this year can be the year we turn the corner.

I know some will call me crazy but I seriously think it comes down to money. I mean you would have thought after our great 2022 season recruiting would have been on fire. But it really wasn’t.

I mean I think most of us thought getting a big time 5* QB lie Nico would have offensive studs lining up to come here. They didn’t. I seriously think it’s our NIL.

Perhaps. I also think we have recruiters that arent as hungry any more. Willie Martinez, Glen Ellarbee, and WR Coach are our weakest recruiters, considering.

WR is a position we should be 8-10 deep with four star talent. I wont apologize for my opinion, because its absolutely accurate.

Ap and all the board insiders have said that the staff is picky in terms of personality of players they recruit. They want “team first” players, and guys who “aren't concerned with $” and that they wont get into bidding wars. Im not a huge fan of that policy because we have lost out on a lot of recruits that way

Can you name other teams that are 8-10 deep with 4* talent at WR?

Ruiz opening up the checkbook again. I agree with you. I don’t like committed recruits taking visits. Why take visits after you have committed to a place? All that does is create panic amongst the coaches.
I think you mean “panic amongst the fans”. Committed kids take visits elsewhere all the time. We host kids that are committed elsewhere all the time. It’s part of the game. The more highly ranked guys you have committed the more you have to fight off other heavyweights. The vast majority of kids stick with commitments. It’s hard to flip kids when there are no staffing changes when level of school is similar. To flip a kid you’re talking them into admitting they chose wrong. This board is great evidence of that.

I'm with you. You'd think that every once in a while, we'd have a class where we stack guys like Nico, Ross, Matthews, and Sanders Jr. instead of just signing one or two elite players per class. Maybe I'm stupid but my brain says if we can land Nico and Sanders, we can land anyone. So why don't the stars ever align for 3 or 4 guys like that?

because you are competing with the best of the best for the best of the best.

we aren't in the Butch era of recruiting of waiting until closing time to try and pick up the ugly chicks still at the bar.

we are going after the hottest ones. the same ones all the guys are going after. its a much more difficult task to pull off.

my God we got entitled so dang fast.

I wonder if TE usage over the course of last season has anything to do with him looking around? What are the comparative stats?

Or maybe he is just making certain our offense is his best fit? That TE room is going to be really deep to not use them much.

You don’t think committed kids taking visits doesn’t at least make the staff nervous? While you are correct in that most kids stick, in these days of pay to play and money flowing like water, it’s a much less if a guarantee. And we have seen Miami especially drop bags and get guys. I am not saying Sneed is gonna flip. I just don’t like these guys taking visits after committing.

If you wanna take visits fine. Take all the visits you want. But if you commit be serious about it.

We were in 12 personnel a crap ton this season.

And in spite of the additional potential opportunities with two TEs in the game for quite a few snaps the TEs combined averaged slightly less than four receptions per game.

The TE's were in the game to block, not catch passes

I get it. I don’t disagree in principle. But it’s the nature of today’s game. Don’t like it? Don’t recruit highly coveted guys.

To answer your question, no I don’t. Not in the way fans do. I got out of college coaching a few years back and to me if you’re doing your job right you make a board, you have a back plan and a back up to the back up. You better be upfront and tell kids that whether they are committed or not, if they are looking at other options then so am I. If you are out possibly looking for something better then there is a chance I might host someone I like better. I also have no issue with Dabo’s stance with guys being committed can’t take visits. But to my knowledge they don’t take commits from guys they will maybe later drop later in the cycle. He also doesn’t run guys off if they can’t play dead in a western. But by having that stance I believe you somewhat limit your pool to select from.

The last thing I’ll say then I’ll try to go back to mostly lurking is I see this constant insistence that kids always pick the highest level bidder. It’s just not true. It happens, but not at the rate people think. It’s a factor yes. But usually not THE factor. You have to be in the ball park. But you better have them believe you’re getting them developed and ready for the NFL where the real money can be made. All things being similar it comes down to who has the relentless, borderline psycho recruiters. I don’t think we have very many of those on staff and for that reason we are somewhat at a ceiling recruiting wise.
