Won 5 vs 8

I'm hesitant to say the 1st half was called well, but it was at least called evenly. I thought it was over-officiated, IMO. But then the 2nd half...it was like 3 different officials came out for the 2nd half. Heavily one-sided.
Agree...too many fouls called in the 2nd half imo but I can't say much because it was physical but evenly called overall. However, the 2nd half was atrocious in terms of the disparity. The irony is it actually helped us at the end because we were able to inbound the ball and take more time off the clock...lol.

Same here, I don't usually blame officials, but those refs clearly let the crowd affect them. I don't know how Barnes kept his composure. Worst called game I've seen in a long time.
Correct, and that's what it was. They allowed the crowd to dictate the flow, emotion, and how they officiated it.

There is no way in hell that white ref didn't have money on IL.

It is simply not possible to explain what he was doing otherwise.

Even looking for a flagrant foul to the head on Mashack when Mashack was the one who was fouled and his hands were down.
Go back and listen to how disappointed he sounded when he officially called the last shot good and the game for Tennessee.

Announcers may have said that but there wasn't even a common foul called on Boswell. They had called the foul on Mashack from the start.
They called a common foul on Mashack, which has to stand. They could have additionally called a flagrant foul on Boswell for initiating contact to the head/neck area. Both fouls would stand. I believe Mashack would then shoot the flagrant FTs, and then Boswell would shoot the common foul FTs.

Ironically, the common foul initially called should have been an offensive foul on Boswell who initiated any and all contact.

Having not yet seen the game, but reading these calmer, more objective reactions to how the game was called... sounds like just the kind of game a team needs to win to rise to a championship standard.

If you can maintain your focus when the norms of the game are in chaos, you're becoming something special.

Also, thanks to all posters for the health warning. I'll be sure to take my BP med before I watch the game video.

While it was somewhat even, they switched officiating styles 1/2 way through the first half from ā€œletting them playā€ to a super tightly called game. IMO. Obviously, they then switched to a completely biased called game for the home team.

The Illinois coach ought to spend some time directing his players instead of constantly crying to the officials - he deserved to lose.

Told my son to deal with it, fox announcers and they have Big 10 bias so you shouldn’t have expected anything different from announcers.
Yep, Robbie Hummel (Purdue) at his finest. Him and his partner were both so confused why the shot clock reset (and ultimately was turned off on the side out with 18 seconds left. They were nearly beside themselves. They forgot the shot clock resets to 20 on a foul call.

Generic question for those who have been refs:

It happens frequently. Refs have to change the way a game is being called. Maybe in a loosely called game players are taking advantage, the risk of injury is getting elevated, certain sized players are getting benefits beyond the rules, etc. Or a tightly called game is turning into a free throw contest with a midnight ETA.

So when your zebra team decides to change the way you're calling the game, do you inform both coaches during a timeout? Or do you let the players "figure it out" for themselves?

Seems like I remember once a ref coming over to our huddle and saying something like "we're gonna start calling more fouls, so adjust accordingly."

Worst officiated game in 72 years That I've seen. About the 2 min mark the announcers said that Illinois had only 3 fouls called on the the whole 2nd half. their coach spent more time crying to the Refs than he spent talking to his team.

A huge turn around occurred in that timeout by Illinois. The coach spent the entire timeout jawing at the refs…not one word to his team.
On the inbounds pass stolen by Igor, Illinois had their center as the inbounds man and he lost control and Igor went in for the jam.
Wonder which coach decided to put stone hands out there?
Haha
