Recruiting Football Talk VIII

We live probably 20 minutes apart bud. Agree with all of this. I am stuck here because i married here and had kids...much rather be in Knoxville which will always be home to me.
Married a Fort Mill girl and brought her to Knoxville. When we started dating it was just a small town, now I get lost every year when we visit for Christmas. Crazy to see the changes in the last 16 years.

Didnt know you were here in Charlotte for the game bud. Yall could have tailgated with us. My little brother who has a nuclear engineering degree from NCSU flew in for the azzwhipping too. We had a blast. Hope the VOLS are here again soon.
What a kind (retroactive ;) ) gesture. Would've loved that. I was with some friends and I put a post on here to gather info about were to go. Friday night, we ate at Noble Smoke BBQ, while listening to bluegrass music outside. Loved it. Saturday, we mostly walked around (and ate at) Optimist Food Hall.

It looks like a great city...would love to see more of it. If UT plays there again, I'll hold you to your offer.

Just checked on some of PFF's numbers to make sure I'm not crazy and they're seeing the same thing. Howard had 9.1 ypa against the blitz, 4.1 without it.

8 attempts can easily be skewed by one or two really long catch and runs by the WR. Looks like they didn't blitz him much, hopefully because opposing teams could easily get home without blitzing.

That's a fair point for the Michigan game, but I posted some stuff above that brings in player analytics across the careers of the players on the roster and the phenomena exists outside of that game. They excel in the short / quick game and they pick the blitz apart. Both their QB and WR group are built for it, and their OL is weak right now. Gotta beat 'em with 4.

Edit: The long in the game was also only 24, so nothing that would skew even the Michigan results too much.

Those aren't your normal "tourists"...you have to be pretty well off, or have well off sponsors, or save for years and years, and in absolutely insane shape to climb that thing.

From what I understand this is what happens when bad weather forces an already super narrow window that you can climb it, down to a day or two.

Everybody piles up at Basecamp and waits....and nobody wants to waste the massive amounts of money and time, including all the time they have spent training for years on other mountains in preparation for that one narrow window....so they all wait around and try to make it instead of going home.
Yea that makes sense. I did read an article last year that the mountain is just covered in trash. Obviously, when you finish with something, it makes a lot more sense to leave it than they to carry the trash back down the mountain.

They actually have groups now that don’t try to summit the mountain. They just go around picking up trash.

And it still freaks me out that if you die up there, your body just stays. Too dangerous to try to bring you down. You can be trying to summit and pass by a frozen corpse.

I think, eliminate the auto-bids and use the ranking week just before the conference championship games...place the teams how they’re ranked at the end of the final regular season week.
Conferences (especially the SEC) will never give up their championship games, but they’re superfluous and unnecessary. Only serve to be counterproductive.

I agree that we absolutely need to get pressure but I wouldn't start with the blitz.

According to my analytics:
- Will Howard is the #9 QB in CFB against the blitz.
- OSU has the #2 WR unit on quick / short passing routes.
- The WR unit drops to #34 on deep routes.

Reading OSU boards, they lost to Michigan because the Wolverines were able to get pressure with just 4. OSU's receiver room is the best in the country, and they excel in the quick / short game. Obviously we need to get to the QB, but if we have to depend on the blitz to do that we're playing into exactly what they want.

They're missing their starting left tackle. They're missing their starting center.

We've got the #8 pass rushing EDGE unit, the #9 pass-rushing Interior DL unit, but only the #117 pass-rushing LB unit.

Pardon the essay, but I know we're going to see a TON of "why are we not blitzing more???" next Saturday. Given the strengths / weaknesses on these 2 rosters, the path to winning has to be to beat them with 4, and I really think we can.
I agree. If we start blitzing like crazy we will doing them a favor. From what I have seen Howard is game manager type with some good receivers. His weakness in my opinion is that he has too much faith in his receivers and puts the ball in harm's way quite a bit.
I think we will play cover 2 most of the time maybe quarters. Go bear and simulated pressure occasionally and as they get closer to the red zone. Their guards are not good, particularly the right guard. With the injuries they have I think we can play with a 6 or sometimes 5 man box and drop into coverage and hunt turnovers.
Blitzes need to be well timed and disguised (surprises). We won't win just bringing the house on every play.

On offense I really think we will be able to run on them. They got tore up against Michigan by inside zone. If it works like I think we won't have to have a stellar offensive game to beat them.
The more I see the more I think we will handle them quite well, we match up well. WGWTFA.

I hope that whatever he does, that it is something new that can't just be sat on like in the UGA game.

We need to start working on and adjusting gameplans for our bigger games weeks or months before we even play those games.

Do something creative defensively that OSU has not seen us do before. It seems like a lot of teams do that to us.
Agreed McGill...I know Kirby basically has year long practice/game plan strategies specifically for our offense.

The Bill Belichick that you see at press conferences and most interviews isn’t the real guy, it’s just schtick. He’s actually very engaging and entertaining. His first few years in NE we got to see his real personality. Then he won multiple Super Bowls which afforded him the opportunity to become a jackass with the media.
Brady won multiple superbowls, Bill has a losing record in the NFL without Tommy Boy.

Question. Do you see you see tennessee working on tempo in CFP practices? Any new wrinkles, or more shovel passes?

Any word who's highest on transfer porthole board?
We liked Womack but not enough as Ole Miss.

Two other guys were working that I believe have been publicly mentioned.

Other than that not a whole lot.
