"Fence Around Tennessee"?????

IF I'VE SAID IT ONCE... I've said it a thousand times....

Tennessee high school football is in the bottom half of the 50 states for high school football talent. We're above states like Delaware, Montana, and Alaska but behind Florida, Cali, Alabama, Pennsylvania, Texas, and on and on....

The argument of "Well if they're not talented why do out of state schools offer them and not UT?".... this happens in every state, every year. If we signed 28 players from TN every year, we'd go 4-8 every year. There are kids in Alabama and Mississippi who have not gotten scholly offers from their home state schools, but have them from UT. It works the same way in every state. Stop fighting for TN kids just because they're TN kids. We want talent, not homebodies.

As for Patrick Turner, he was waaay overrated!! That's a horrible example.

Golden Tate has shown flashes but it's too early to write the book on him.

You'd be hard pressed to come up with an impressive list of current NFL players from the state of TN. Al Wilson was solid for a short time in the NFL. Cedric Wilson is a fair receiver...... ummmm..... ????

Not in the top 10, but in the top 15 for sure.
NOT the bottom half.....

I'm kinda surprised you included Harrison Smith in that group... The kid is definitely very good, and was a stud at Catholic, but do you think his skill level is on par with the rest of those guys or was he just someone that came to mind when you were thinking about good college players from the state that didn't go to UT?

I don't think he's a future first rounder but he;s a solid player that can do a lot of things.

Basically, he's better than a lot of the backups that Tennessee has. He probably wouldn't start but he's solid as a fill-in guy.

Patrick Turner was drafted in the third round of the NFL draft in April. Remind me what Tennessee receiver was drafted that high last year?

Golden Tate is a legit All-American candidate for the upcoming season.

Kelley Washington was drafted in the 3rd round too. What's your point?

Patrick Turner was overrated at USC. Kelley Washington was a better college receiver. Reminding you of that... :birgits_giggle:

I honestly think that the staff saying that was really just coach speak and playing to the fan base. I think what they really mean is that they're going to go after the players that they really want hard. However, that hasn't worked with some of their prime targets (Marlon Brown, Justin Maclin, Keiwone Malone, etc.). But this staff was behind on working on those guys.

Also, Memphis is always hard. Remember that there are 7, count em, 7, SEC schools that are closer to Memphis than UT is.

That's not true.

It's just funny because many many many people on here criticized Fulmer for letting a lot of in-state talent go elsewhere....And I bet if I did some research I would find many folks on here talk about how great it was when Kiffin made his rally cry about building a fence around TN... In fact, if I remember correctly, that phrase was the headline the following day for the News-Sentinel....

Listen, I agree that there is no need to stay in state when we can pull in better talent out of state. And I believe Kiffin will be able to do that... All I'm saying is that it is interesting that he hasn't even offered them... At least Golden Tate, Patrick Turner, Harrison Smith and others held offers from UT...

It's quality football players. The best of the best make it to the NFL.... we want NFL players, am I wrong?

No...you're right...but TN does not have the population that many of the other states have either. So there are fewer people with the opportunity.

Yes, I think you are wrong... I think we want great college players. NFL requires a lot of other tangibles that the college level doesn't.. there are many 1st rounders drafted largely on potential than on any on the field production that they had in college....

Can you name a player that played at UT and was drafted... and a player that played at UT and was NOT drafted.... and a scenario in which you would rather have the undrafted player playing for UT next year in their prime rather than the drafted player? I certainly can't name a situation like that....

2% of the NFL population is an average share right? 50 states, 2% per state, 100% total, right? That's not horrible.

PS: Let me guess you want Ryan Karl back in a UT uniform don't you? With Phil Fulmer on the sidelines....
