Defensive coaches have always been able to figure out Heupel’s offense. It works b/c running tempo forces all 11 defensive players to also have it figured out. There is normally a player that gets confused which creates an opening. When Vols aren’t running tempo it gives the DCs time to get everyone on the same page with their assignments.I think this is more about defenses catching up to Heupel offense couple with poor and inconsistent oline play and mediocre wide receivers.
Defenses have always figured out the new, innovative offenses over time.
