Why wasn't it a Federal matter before now? If your assertion is correct, and I have no reason to doubt it, then why would it NOW be hypothetically important for them to take control of his security today when it wasn't important before?
And with the case of Trump, if the SS isn't doing a good enough job, why should they be allowed to lead his security when we already know in RFK Jr's case that SS security for presidential candidates is optional?

You're painting a picture as though the SS can have it both ways.

I can say I'm running for president but the usss doesn't care until a threshold is reached. It's not optional, it's measured for an agency already stretched thin
