While I actually hope Mike Garrett and Steve Sample hire the basketball equivalent of Paul Hackett, I'll extend them the same courtesy I do most major schools looking for a hoops coach. Here are the first five calls they should make:

PJ Carlesimo
Mike Dunlap
Brian Shaw
Kerry Keating
Eric Musselman

Reggie Theus or The General would not be interested, would they?

Theus certainly would. Knight had absolutely no interest in the USC job the last time it was open, going so far as to publicly ridicule the idea. Can't see why that would have changed.

For right now: PJ.
If They Are Looking Long Term: Can't go wrong with any of the other four. I think any of them would do a superb job.

I doubt a big name guy will take the job considering the NCAA poking around out there. I expect an interim guy for a year, maybe 2 and then they will go after a big name if they have avoided serious trouble.

yeah i guess Sacramento offered him the head job.

I'm hearing they are going after stan van gundy which to me seems a little optomistic.

That would be just dumb. There's no way Van Gundy would know what he is doing in college.

Jeff Van Gundy would be one of the top 20 coaches in college basketball the moment he signed on for a collegiate gig.

So, college basketball is a totally different game than NBA basketball? Only difference is he would have to recruit. It would probably be very hard to convince a high school guy to come play for a coach that has been to the NBA Finals.

I'm just saying that Stan wouldn't fit in with the college ranks too much. I don't think he would have more than one tenth desire to do so either.
