We all know it, but interesting to see a player come flat out and talk about it. Long Live Capitalism!!

Sorry for two threads in one day, but I find so much interesting things at times. Hopefully, it sparks conversation and helps make VN THE message board others can only try to aspire to be.

Nothing new. We all know it happened.

A former NFL player told me that when he was being recruited ( ~50 years ago) he was met at the airport of a school in the central part of the USA. His host took him to a motel and opened a suitcase with $50,000. He would up signing with a west coast team and had a summer job working for one of that team's wealthy boosters. His "job" only required that he show up every day.

I knew a coach who recruited Eric Dickerson for OK State. He said Dickerson wanted $10K for a visit and $50K to sign. SMU paid up. That was a lot of money then

Don’t get me wrong, I think he’s a complete dick. He’s an incredible hypocrite, but I don’t know if this gonna be the issue it’s being painted as.
The issue is NIL existed before NIL was official.

It was t illegal. It brine no law.

The NCAA has runes, not laws. Those rules were illegal. This is a non story.

The NCAA "runes" were illegal? Really? Who's supposed to manage college sports and college football? Nobody? No runes? That's what
we have now--read and chaos. I am looking forward to a 32-team football playoff and NCAA basketball with 108 teams. Year-round playoff games, everybody in Nascar-like uniforms. "Here comes the M&M Marching Band from Georgia!" Swimmers from 1980 asking for money. Unionized players. Good stuff....

There were a handful of players getting under-the-table money--but not many, and nothing like the craziness we see today.
Sorry to say, turbo, but HAHAHAHA. I don't think you realize how covertly dirty colleges were back in the day. Not only was money used to for enticement, but access to puzzy, and let's just say, privileged transportation as well. You have no idea, man, no idea.too.

Well, okay, blah blah blah.

players cost 100X now. Let's just move past this drivel and talk about the huge increase in player cost. I am not paying that.

the briefcase days are over. Can't fit $10 million in a briefcase.

Oh my......(As I clutch my pearls)

While it's somewhat entertaining to laugh at a scumbag like Meyer being implicated, does anyone think this was rare?

To think that good old Tennessee wasn't up to the same shenanigans is laughable though.

Best we just sit this one out. After all- Ohio State, etc gets caught cheating and the NCAA may throw the book at Tennessee as a result. Seems to be the way things happen around here.

This is nothing.
The idea programs weren't paying for the past 50-60 years is equivalent of thinking professional wrestling used to be real.
I remember players having Corvettes and Trans Ams when I was in school, and it was obvious they did not come from money.

Those laws violated at least two longstanding federal laws. The 1887 Interstate Commerce Act and the 1890 Sherman Antitrust Act.

Ergo, those rules were illegal. The NCAA got away with it for far too long. Now they have to pay the piper.

Meyer has always been a sanctimonious and hypocritical jerk. I remember his speeches about only coaching at places who were willing to “do things the right way” and how most school don’t do it the right way. Enjoy this nuggets from his book. This was after he coached the Pouncey bros, Hernandez, and that guy who beat his girl then played a week later.

Everybody was doing it. The Saban’s, Meyer’s, and Smarts were just really good at hiding it so they got away with it. It’s why these are the guys railing against what we have now where recruiting, while still not fair across the board, does have more parity then 3 teams hoarding talent. Hell, Saban knew his main advantage was over so he called it a day.
