2024 Transfer Portal Thread

Pretty sure it’s been stated here and elsewhere that Spyre is plenty willing to pony up, as they do with football, but Barnes doesn’t want us to shell out for transfers and give them significantly more than the guys who have been here for years. So I guess “we don’t do bidding wars” hasn’t been explicitly stated, but anyone with half a brain can read between the lines on this. Respect to Barnes for this, as there’s not many coaches out there who will run it like that, but it’s certainly not going to do us any favors in recruitments like this one (maybe even to our own benefit).

This kid isn’t thinking long term. He’s just looking at the instant money, he should be looking at how well Barnes has developed players for decades and think about how he can be molded into a high draft pick after 1 year. If he goes elsewhere then so be it

This is unfair. If I can take 500k+ more to change jobs for a year, when I may never have the chance to make that kind of money again, I’m taking it without thinking twice. If you’re at a point in your life where that much money isn’t significant to you, congrats - for most of us, and probably Chaz, it is.

This. I want the best team possible to win a championship.

The ultimate competitor wants to win championships. In the business world, I want to be the best. Is it practical every year? Maybe not. But that is the attitude the ultimate competitor has.

That’s why I respect MJ, Tiger, Coach Belichick, Saban, and others. While I may disagree or dislike their personalities or behavior, I respect the fact they don’t settle.
Players demanding excellence from themselves and their teammates is a completely different discussion. (MJ and tiger)

Belichick had a very specific collective bargaining agreement he had stay within the framework of. He couldn’t, nor do I think he would have, just thrown the most money to every player they wanted. So again, it was a different type of not settling.

Saban was allowed to cheat and buy players.

None of those that you brought up have anything to do with coach Barnes trying to navigate the new NIL landscape in college sports.

You and some others have this ridiculous (yes it’s ridiculous, nonsensical, and simplistic) notion that if you throw all the monies at players you are guaranteed championships. It’s so much more complex than that. Starting with the fact that as much as we would like to believe it is, available money isn’t unlimited.

Barnes has no control over what spyre does…lol

Tbh I don’t think he has the potential for a high draft pick. But he and his camp probably don’t share that opinion.

Are we actually “stuck” though?

I feel like we could get a visit from at least Wooga. He’s already planning visits, why not pivot over to him
Here’s what you need to remember, and I’m not singling you out, this applies to everyone with the mindset, but remember this staff is very picky. How many years did fans ask “well why don’t we recruit more Top 50, or Top 100 guys”…the staff does their due diligence on recruits and how they’d fit here, the program, the culture, academically, system etc etc.

So just because there are some guys available doesn’t mean they are options, or fits.

KY may be a blueblood program, but Pope is still a very unproven coach. I think playing for Pope at this juncture is a much higher risk than playing for Barnes, who has established himself and this program. KY is rebuilding from the ground up.

So you assume YOU know what Spyre does. Many sources have said, "We don't do bidding wars". Including some connected to Spyre. Should I believe you or them?
No crying here. I couldn’t care less if you like my opinion or not. You seem to be the one to take issue with other people’s opinions more than anyone.

It’s not that cut and dry though, at least imo.

A more accurate comparison using the job field would be to say Job A will pay you $500k more than Job B your first year. However, you have a chance to earn 4x as much at Job B in Year 2 if you meet your quotas than you do at Job A.

So you’d take the instant 1.7 million over let’s say 500K knowing the coach that coaches the university offering 500K has a better chance of developing you into a prospect for the nba where you’d make more money than 1.7 million? Interesting

If he comes here, or Kentucky, and puts up mirrored numbers (like Knecht did) he’s a lottery pick
Well I doubt that’s going to happen. And he’s smaller and less athletic than Knecht with a low shot. If Knecht goes in the lower third of the lottery in a weak draft that would surprise me if Lanier goes lottery.

This is more to my way of thinking. If Lanier's goal is the NBA, one school currently gives you a better chance IMO. If he feels the NBA is not in his future, then by all means, get your money now.

*A perceived better chance. It's not like Pope is a middle school coach and UK is TSU. I mean half the NBA are UK players. At 22, with borderline NBA prospects, yes Im taking the 1.7 million over 500k every single day. Y'all are coming from a place of established adults with some money in the bank. 1.7 million is absolutely life changing money for a large portion of the country (if you're smart with it).

Nobody thought Knecht was either thought to be fair. His athleticism seems similar based on numbers posted, and that’s prior to the UT bump in athleticism that Knecht saw. Knecht is said to be a Top 10 pick, lottery might be pushing it but would be right there and a “high draft pick” imo.

I assume you're talking about him. You should know I'm not one.
Of course. edited it to add Mookie who was also being badgered.

Btw, this situation with Lanier does somewhat resemble the recruitment of Mauigoa in football. I take it that's what you were talking about earlier.
