It actually wasn't the Indian casinos that threw a fit. The Seminole Tribe and the State of Florida had an agreement to allow sports betting at their casinos. Another group of casinos (West Flagler Associates) brought suit and was able to get that agreement ripped up, so for the time being there isn't any sports betting.Florida had prizepicks and Underdog and they shut them down because the Indian casinos threw a fit.
North Carolina is only allowing twelve total companies to come in and they have to affiliate with a team/sport/casino etc. No reason for Harrah’s to put up much fuss since that’s more revenue for them from folks that can’t regularly visit their casinos in the western end of the state. It actually wasn't the Indian casinos that threw a fit. From what I've read, the effort sounds like it is stuck in some kind of legal hell around the definition of "casino gambling." If that term is interpreted/defined to include sports betting, then it will continue to be banned. There is another effort to have that term interpreted/defined to include only casino games (slots, blackjack, roulette, etc.) and not sports betting. Regardless, the whole thing is incredibly stupid.
The older I get, the more I come to realize that only lawyers and their billable hours win.
It's fascinating to see the different internal politics that a debate about legalizing sports betting exposes. The tribal relationships in FL are the reason it isn't legal, but there are many other states with those same relationships (NC, AZ, etc.) and it quickly passed.North Carolina is only allowing twelve total companies to come in and they have to affiliate with a team/sport/casino etc. No reason for Harrah’s to put up much fuss since that’s more revenue for them from folks that can’t regularly visit their casinos in the western end of the state.
Since it has no casinos, Tennessee is the only state with online-only sports betting. The conservative state's unlikely launch of an uncapped, digital sports betting market excited industry stakeholders, but other restrictions could hurt its potential.
Tennessee was the only state that made the operators return a mandatory 10% hold — basically, the books needed to keep 10 cents of every dollar wagered, or pay a fine. But in April 2023, TN passed a bill that removed this rule and replaced it with a 1.85% tax rate on betting handle — the total betting volume. It's the first rule of its kind in the U.S.
That means if a sportsbook generates $10M in betting action in a month, it must pay $185,000 in taxes, even if it lost money to bettors.
Gambling is illegal in Alabama, even our casinos that have slot machines are labeled as "bingo", and up until November we could do Prizepicks but only combo bets. Like McCaffery and Henry will combine for o/u 200 rushing yards, and we had to do parlays so we were essentially betting on 4 players for a 2 bet parlay. In November something changed where we can bet single legs. But last month a gambling bill passed in Alabama and now it's gotta pass the senate in November. We'll get online sports gambling, table games, and lottery.North Carolina is only allowing twelve total companies to come in and they have to affiliate with a team/sport/casino etc. No reason for Harrah’s to put up much fuss since that’s more revenue for them from folks that can’t regularly visit their casinos in the western end of the state.
I had doubts for a long time that Alabama would legalize it but it sounds like it might come in 2025.
