The UK is working with nations including the US to provide Ukraine with thousands of new AI-enabled drones that could swarm Russian targets simultaneously, according to people familiar with the matter.

Western military planners developing the technology believe it could allow Ukraine to overwhelm certain Russian positions with the unmanned vehicles, said the people, who asked not to be identified discussing sensitive matters. The drones could be sent to Ukraine within months, they said, while warning the timeline could slip.

Drones have become increasingly important in the Russia-Ukraine war as the conflict approaches the two-year mark, and a global race is ongoing to develop new technologies that could shape the future of warfare. Russia is ramping up its own domestic production of battle drones to support the invasion and has received significant supplies from its ally Iran.

A coalition of Ukraine’s allies has pledged to deliver 1 million drones to the country within a year, and the military said it used naval drones to destroy a Russia warship in the Black Sea last week. In January, White House officials met defense companies to discuss innovative battlefield technologies that could aid Ukraine in its bid to combat Russia’s invasion.

The focus on drones comes as Ukraine faces a shortage of artillery, a situation that could become so critical in the next three months that the military may have to decide to focus on a narrower war front, Bloomberg previously reported. Ukraine announced Saturday that it was withdrawing from Avdiivka after a months-long battle.

German Chancellor Olaf Scholz raised the pressure on European allies to increase military aid to Ukraine, using a speech at the Munich Security Conference to warn of the political and financial cost of a Russian victory.

While new drone capabilities do not replace the urgent need for shells, they may help mitigate some of that shortfall and create a new dynamic on the battlefield, the people said.

The AI-enabled drones would be deployed in large fleets, communicating with each other to target enemy positions without each one having to be controlled by a human operator, one of the people said.

Speaking in Munich, Ukrainian President Volodomyr Zelenskiy called for its allies to provide it with more long-range weapons and artillery. “Keeping Ukraine in an artificial deficit of artillery and long-range weapons allows Putin to adapt to the current intensity of the war,” he said.

Guess not. The question for you is, a) the US brags about fomenting color revolutions around the world, to overthrow regimes they do not like and b) the US also openly states it's desire to overthrow Putin.

If you are Putin, what do you do? Freely allow pro-western groups to operate within Russia, sowing seeds of unrest or crackdown harshly?

If you are being honest, there isn't a good answer. Even in the US, our freedom has been used against us by irresponsible shady groups who operate behind the scenes to poison our cultural and political well. There has to be a responsibility component.

Ukraine couldn't even muster a positive k:d ratio in Mauripol, which had some of its best fighters where Russians attacked with less than adequate numbers and you think these untrained undisciplined yahoos it is throwing into combat over the last year, attacking heavily fortified Russian positions, are mustering positive k:d ratios? Give me a break.

You seem to be confusing anti-Putin with "pro-west". Navalny marched with RIM, believed that Crimea was Russian territory, and for the most part, subscribed to the same beliefs about Russia's position in the world, that the vast majority of Russian politicians do.

He was Putin light, with less murder and Mafia corruption.

If I were an authoritarian dictator who has stayed in power for nearly 25 years, via murder and repression, then I'd probably keep murdering and repressing; seems to be effective on maintaining the serf-mentality of the Russian populace.

He stepped down in 2008 after serving 2 terms, following Russian law. So, he hasnt been in power for 25 years nor is he a dictator...but go off queen.

Again, the US brags about color revolutions overthrowing regimes they dont like. The US is clear they want regime change in Russia. If you were Putin, would you allow western interests to operate in Russia? Would you allow pro-western protests? Come on. You are dumb, but you arent that dumb.

Lol Putin never stepped down. He allowed Medvedev to pretend to lead Russia, but only a (willful) fool or a true sycophant actually believes that Putin has relinquished an iota of power.

When you jump the shark like this, it makes it impossible for anyone besides @Rasputin_Vol to take you seriously.
