Would this be a loss for the Crimson Tide? Absolutely. I’ve said for over a year now that Downs is a transformative talent. His ability to handle multiple roles at an elite level — while also possessing rare football IQ — made a significant impact on UA’s secondary in 2023. This caliber of player doesn’t just grow on trees. We must be able to admit that.
Not only that, but the potential Downs loss is compounded by all the other departures on the back half of Alabama’s defense. So far, we’ve seen 10 defensive backs from the 2023 roster leave (or enter the transfer portal, at least), which includes the following players:
There’s no reason to sugarcoat anything… that’s significant, whether it be from a talent or numbers standpoint. That’s six of the seven main contributors from this past season, plus several guys who were looked at as the future. That’s going to be a concerning development for Alabama fans who have been used to seeing high-level talent with both the front-level starters and depth.
