In a rational world (not one run by dems) you would think that the non-participating workforce would get its collective azz back to work. There are a few major problems though; too few actual STEM majors with degrees oriented toward anything productive, too many people with degrees that don't lead to anything, and jobs are in other countries. Lots of acquired debt with too little opportunity. UPS drivers can make a bundle dropping off packages that go on credit cards though.
Doesn't help at all that business schools and an overdeveloped sense of efficiency turned the business world toxic. Part of the science and engineering problem goes back to the rush to hire foreign engineers and other technical majors under the H-1B visa system. Lots of US engineers were dumped in the 90s ... doesn't exactly tell potential college students that working hard for an engineering degree is worth it or has long term potential. Then colleges bought the business model and decided to sell degrees without worth, so now US industry sits on it's collective thumb and spins round and round turning out one fad after another ... and doing nothing meaningful.
