The Atlanta Braves

Seriously does this **** happen to any other school?
What do you mean...having a mediocre regular season and end up making the CWS? Yes. The "poor pitiful me" stuff from us kind of needs to stop, at least for the moment. It isn't 2014.

Even though it does not feel like it, this is the furthest Vitello's Vols have made it in the postseason. With probably his 3rd (maybe even 4th; I think that 2020 team was going to be really good) best team. Enjoy it.

Tony says that 2020 team was his best.
But no I'm mainly referring to everytime we get into a big moment or spot this school pisses down its leg. Yesterday the way this team played tells me they were scared to death.
But just in recent memory.
Basketball against the NUNS and against FAU
Football against SCAR and choking against LSU's backup QB in Atlatna, plus the 01 team that was headed to the Rose Bowl.
Baseball last year against ND and then last night against LSU.
If you get beat you get beat but time and time again we just give **** away.

If that was true, football would not have beaten LSU or Alabama last season. The Basketvols wouldn't have beaten Duke in the last NCAAT or beaten UK/A&M in the SECT last year. Baseball would not have swept Vandy, or gotten its act together at any point in the regular season, or come from behind to beat Clemson, or come from behind to beat Southern Miss, or come from behind to beat Stanford 2 days ago.

You've set up a scenario where any result other than being the champ, every single freaking time, is considered pissing down your leg. I want to win every single time too, but just because you end up disappointed doesn't mean the whole thing was a failure. You are choosing to focus on the single moment of "failure," even though you might have had 5 successes in clutch moments just to get there.

Seriously - I know BVS is a thing but things are going pretty good right now. The poor pitiful me stuff doesn't really work if your team(s) are actually pretty good.

Nobody wants to hear this, but we were flat lucky to not blow that Bama game. Gibbs catches 1 pass and it's an L. It's one of the reasons why Bama stayed above us in the polls.
And no it doesn't have anything to do with being champ. Zanes throw away yesterday, Moore dropping the ball on a routine double play.
Just once I want to be able to say TN lost but they played their best the other guys were just better, but that never happens it's always a comedy of errors. Last night our Fielding was little league esque.

But...we didn't blow the game. They were lucky to win in 2009. They've been lucky to get back in the CFP mix on multiple occasions due to results in other games they needed to happen. Kirby brought in Justin Fields to run an obvious fake punt against them in the SECCG. It happens.

But back to baseball. Can't even you admit though that despite thinking UT athletic teams are just a bunch of choke artists, weren't there a ton of moments in big spots for them to choke before last night, but they didn't? They could have just gone away quietly during the regular season and never made regionals, but won several big games down the stretch to make it. They could have lost to Clemson in regionals, or suffered a real nut kick and lost to Charlotte twice after the elation of beating Clemson (now if that happened, I'd actually be with you in this argument). They could have choked against Southern Miss. They could have failed to come back against Stanford and gone 0-4 in Tony's CWS appearances.

The UGA game last year.

Fwiw the guys weren’t “pissing down their leg” or scared yesterday. Offensively they were pressing in a significant fashion, something they’ve struggled with all year imo.

If anybody did anything timid it was elander holding the guy at 3rd on the two out double.

The first one is often the hardest one to score. Once we cracked the door there’s a good chance the flood gates open at some point given the amount of baserunners. The longer the 0 is up there, typically the more you press.

They weren’t afraid of the moment. They didn’t catch a break, make a break, or have a good day. It happens

And it wasn’t like they were playing a scrub ass team lol.

All 3 of those outfielders were subpar defensively. We didn’t leg anything out. We didn’t steal bases. We didn’t put pressure on anyone.

When you reach the level of baseball where ‘a walk is a rally’ and hitting home runs isn’t an option, you’ve gotta be pretty dang good at everything else and those guys just aren’t.

And in the most important game of the season, they play like a little league team.
Just like in 22 when we wasted one of the best lineups college baseball has ever seen, this team wasted one of the best pitching staffs they will probably ever have.
3 Legit starters, one a top 15 pick. Two guys out of the pen who throw triple digits and can cover multiple innings, Joyce who can hit triple digits he just got hurt then Rusell, Combs, Sewell etc.... we might have good pitching but we will probably never see a staff like this team had again.

If crews and tanks aren’t hitting bombs nobody is.

If you want to bellyache about something from this season, I'd pick on our starting pitching. It is not shocking at all that it took a long time for us come together offensively (if we ever truly "came together" at all). However Dollander/Beam/Burns (as a starter) were noticeably worse than last season, which I don't think anybody anticipated. That, combined with an offense that wasn't all that great for extended portions, results in that regular season that we had.

Given this fanbase's propensity for negativity I'm surprised this seems to be kind of lost in the shuffle, but Dollander wasn't good in his 2 Super Regional/CWS starts. Did not give us a good chance to win those games, but we did anyway. I thought he pitched timid a lot of the time, which might be a function of our bad offense as well.

But in the most important game of the season prior to that, they came back from 4-0 down to beat Stanford. Ditto for the most important game before that against Southern. In the most important game before that, they came from behind to beat Clemson. I could go on and on and on. They could have choked a ton of times before that, in big spots, but didn't. You can't take any enjoyment at all from that? I mean, I'm still tickled they beat Clemson...I did not see them making it out of Regionals when they came into the 9th.

Again, you've set the situation up so that any result other than winning every single game is failure.

They’ve gotta get more athletic to win on that stage. It’s cool to drop bombs in LNS and even in conference but to win in Omaha you’ve gotta be able to cover that outfield and take extra bases.
It's wild how different that stadium is than any other place they play all year, home or away. It's like a totally different game.

No, because the goal is to get to Omaha once you get there nothing else matters. Play well and the results are what they are, if you don't play well then you can what if everything to death.

I don't know for sure, but I have a feeling that any Tennessee loss will be, by definition, a game where we didn't play well. I don't think you'd ever state that we played our best game in a loss, so the situation you're saying you'd be OK with, in your world, never happens.

You hit on the Dollander thing earlier. He was trying to be perfect. Some of that could have been the expectation coming into the season, could have been the defense behind him, the offense, etc. lot goes into mindset but he was no doubt trying to be perfect.

He wasn’t bad in either start. He actually righted the ship and was huge against USM imo. We don’t win that game without him.

True, he did right himself against Southern. Should have given him credit for that.

It is why I actually agree with (I believe it was) checkboards on moving the CWS around. The phrase “going to Omaha” is cool and definitely a legendary tradition in college baseball, but the landscape of what they just played vs the regular season might as well be a different sport.
