I always use my phone to run several speed checks from different points and I usually run a couple ping tests as well.

I upgraded my house to a similar ASUS router and it was a great investment. WIFI reaches the whole house for the most part and I don't need an extender.

Also I bought a Netgear Nighthawk extender and it wasn't worth the amount I paid. It really didn't help that much.

Nope, separate units, both with the Spectrum label on them.

Hubs is mysteriously enamored by the rental thing. 🙄 I’d prefer to buy, but (1) reviews of everything are all over the map, (2) nearly impossible to find reviews for these things in hundred-year-old houses, and (3) although we almost never do “I told you so”, I’d probably hear it if a purchased gadget didn’t work properly.

— I’m thinking that the drop is due to having to travel through two additional walls, one of which is chock-full of plumbing runs. I blame that lazy builder in 1923, who should have known better!

Back when I had Comcast I used my own modem & router -- I just felt the hardware I could buy would be much better than the crap they lease. But I've always been confident enough in my technical ability, if anything happened that required remediation on my end, I could fix it. Recently I checked Comcast's policies for modem rental vs owning, and now they're moving toward not providing the same technical support if you own vs renting. Wtf. Just trying to suck the last penny out of customers trying to save a few dollars.

Just picked up my extender at BB. Cashier ever-so-casually asked what I need it for. I explained, and he immediately said, “Oh, it won’t work for that. You need mesh!” 🙄

I’ll be home in an hour or so. Guess I’ll find out then.
