Official Gramps' Memorial Eternal OT Thread

@hog88 (and anybody else who like historical fiction) , when your were reading the O'Brian books, did you have A SEA OF WORDS? It was written by Dean King and discusses terms, places, and ships in the O'Brian books, and it works just as well for many of the other series of books by authors such as C S Forester (Hornblower series) and Douglas Reeman (aka Alexander Kent - Richard Bolitho series. Reeman may be my favorite; I've read his Bolitho series but not the more current naval books. Also if you find a genre you like, fantasticfiction.com is a great source for finding other authors. I prefer it over Goodreads (goodreads.com). O'Brian is a bit tedious to read which is why I like some other authors better - A SEA OF WORDS helps clear up a lot of stuff.

One of my favorite authors is Bernard Cornwell; his series about 9th and 10th century Britain were really good as were the singles like Agincourt, he's enough a historian that a few of his books are straight non-fiction rather than historical fiction. You might be interested in the Sharpe series about a British soldier in the Napoleonic Wars; I haven't read the series yet, but I'd expect it to be every bit as good as his other books.

I haven’t used A Sea of Words, but have had to use google a few times. I really liked the Hornblower series but the detail in the O’Brian books appeals to me a little more, I almost felt like I could Captain an old sailing ship after about the 4th book. I do liKe Cornwell, I’m 4 books into the Warrior Chronicles now.

officially moved into the house this weekend. a couple things broke during the move, and upon living in the house found a few more issues, but nothing killer.

had some friends and family help, no movers.

Moving sucks! I hope I only have to do it one more time. I’ve only got about one more left in me.

yeah. Tucker now.
Pro tip, make yourself known at the local Ace or True Value hardware store. Try to buy all you can from the smaller stores. The older the workers, the better. Better still if they use tobacco and wear overalls. Wealth of knowledge for diy repairs and know the best people to fix whatever you cannot.
Always take pics before your run to get supplies. Try to get a measure tape on fittings, pipe diameters, and distance between connections and show whoever is helping you.

Best use for a cellphone camera is hardware porn. Take before pics so you can put things back together - especially if it involves electrical connections. Great for taking pictures of model numbers where you can snake a phone but not your head.

Glad one of yall mentioned the vast difference in gas quality from 1 gas station to the next. My check engine light would come on and go off periodically and i thought it was a bad O2 sensor just based on past experiences. Started keeping track of where i bought gas by station each time. Has made a big difference, it almost never comes on now with 87 octane...and never does with 89 octane from the 2 good stations i have found.

I wonder if its ethanol content, contaminated tanks with trash or water...not sure. I lean more towards ethanol though because neither of the 2 good stations are anywhere near new...so their tabks have been used for at least a decade or 2, minimum. Long time to accumulate trash and water IMO.

GO VOLS damnit
