The Atlanta Braves

lol

These 5 stars are on one years deals. They will either go pro or transfer. It is what it is

He’s not a Barnes guy. We can criticize what that means with Rick but it’s obvious he’s not a fit with the program.

There's a reason Barnes only has one FF. Losing guys like Phillips is why.
Barnes has gotten plenty out of other 5-stars (Kennedy Chandler, Springer).

A bigger problem for Rick is not getting enough out of other highly talented guys, like JJJ.

NCAAB postseason is so random; you're a good coach if you consistently get a team there, which Rick does. Ultimately his lack of postseason success I think boils down to bad luck and not making great in-game adjustments.

JJJ couldn’t dribble or shoot when he arrived and now he moves like my grandma

Ehhhhh, I don't really buy the luck thing. There's a reason blue bloods and the best coaches make runs every few years.

Well, I wouldn't say Rick is one of the best coaches. He isn't in the same league of coaches who consistently make runs. Those coaches also usually have a little more talent/depth than he does, and coach at basketball schools. I think that makes a difference. You would think though that given his 27 NCAAT appearances, he'd have more than just 3 Elite Eights and one Final Four, because he's consistently in NCAATs at pretty good seeds.

I know it's an unsatisfying answer that sounds like a cop-out defense of Rick, but I really do think he's gotten unlucky. Especially at Tennessee. He's been upset 2x (Loyola-Chicago, FAU) by teams who made it to the FF. He got upset by an Oregon St team during the COVID year that made it to the Elite Eight.

Why is he so easy to upset though? You would think wifh all his high seeds he would get lucky every once in a while

Love this country.

“We’re bankrupt and can’t pay you.”
“Okay we will go to someone else.”
“WHOA YOU CANT DO THAT!!!”

Maybe he has. The Final Four he made at Texas, and the two Elite Eights, weren't with the best teams he had there.

I think his lack of tournament success is a combo of bad luck + a lack of a sense of urgency at key times. Kind of like when Bobby managed the Braves.

I still think it's a coaching style issue. Too much focus on defense, too slow of a style, he doesn't have guards that can go get a bucket, it's always play through the post and take tough twos.
