Absolutely. How do you think he established the UConn program? I watched Tennessee play UConn in the VERY early days--just after Geno took the job. UConn had very little talent, we were the big dog and had lots of talent. It was IMMEDIATELY obvious that their offensive system was better---better movement, more and quicker passing, backdoor layups, etc. AND he put as much emphasis on defense and rebounding as PS did. We won those early games but not because of our system--but because of our talent advantage. And as the years progressed and UConn got more and more successful and Geno got more talent, one could see what was going to happen. PS was a legend, but coaching team offense was not her strength--let's put it that way. She won a ton of games in which, offensively, we were not good--but managed to win because of our defense and overall talent. As the game progressed, our system's flaws became apparent. There's a reason Geno was 4-0 against PS in national title games---I think that is right--and the reason was his teams were better offensively--more efficient offensively.
And he's the kicker: NOTHING much has changed in 20-25 years. Our offensive system is still inefficient; we still do not move and pass well enough; we have had a average-to-poor Assist/Turnover ratio for 20 years. It's a big reason why we lose the games we lose--not the only reason, but a consistent reason.
