The DeSantis containment thread -- all things DeSantis go here

We go back every year for lobster season.

It’s definitely an adult playground, but that doesn’t keep parents from bringing small children.

Desantis could ban every t-shirt shop on Duval Street for distributing and selling obscene materials near minors.

Maybe that’s his next move.
I don't recall obscene shirts. Maybe they are inside the shops, which I didn't care to go into. Day time key west is a bit different than night time key west though. My first in person encounter with a transgender was on duval street promoting club Aqua(?). I think it's simple to not have sexually explicit shows aimed toward kids. Don't bring them either. Let the kids be kids.

I think it's really weird and immoral that you are defending minors at a sexually explicit show. Thankfully, it's also against Florida law. A law that's been in place prior to DeSantis.

I missed where I said minors should attend a sexually explicit show. I simply asked you a question.

Parental rights is a hot topic in this state right now, so I’m curious if you think parents should be allowed to take their minor children to Rated R movies.

Your take on the Miami hotel getting the alcohol license stripped said it. I'll allow you to clarify, do you think minors should be in attendance at sexually explicit drag shows such as the Miami hotel?

I think it depends on the movie and age of the minor. Rated R is supposed to be 17 and up. I do think the rating system needs a restructure. 50 shades of grey is not appropriate.

I also think there is a significant difference between a movie theater and an in person show when it comes to minors. Do you not see a difference?

At no point did I say minors should be able to attend drag shows. You made that leap, feel free to own it.

Whether a kid is exposed to sexual material in a magazine, movie theater or live performance, it’s still not appropriate.

The Rated R movie by its classification lets parents know there could be material not suitable for children. That doesn’t stop parents from brining minor children to Rated R movies. And the movie theater shouldn’t face repercussions for said minor watching that movie, in spite of what they might be exposed to. The rating is your warning.

Drag shows and strip clubs in Key West do not allow anyone under 18 to enter, but that didn’t stop these business from having scantily clad strippers and transgender people outside the establishment, actively marketing to anyone who passes by, whether they have kids or not. In my opinion those businesses are operating in the gray area, because there’s little warning for parents on what their kids are being exposed to.

I don’t have all the details about DeSantis revoking the liquor license of that hotel in Miami, but I am closer than most to a situation involving Desantis unsuccessfully revoking the liquor license of a business here in Orlando who hosted a drag show. The venue posted a disclaimer along the lines of “some may think this show’s content is not appropriate for those under 18”. No different than the Rated R movie. In my opinion this was an example of government overreach and Desantis was rightfully defeated.

Desantis is an attorney, and is smart enough to know better, but he’s actively going after businesses with flimsy legal justification, over a culture war that doesn’t move the needle in the broader picture of what needs fixing in Florida, let alone this country.

Oh there’s a difference for sure, but not as you suggested. Whether a kid is exposed to sexual material in a magazine, movie theater or live performance, it’s still not appropriate. But there are levels to it.

You've mentioned the key west drag operations operating in grey areas because there is no warning to parents. These drag shows that under the microscope are marketed as "for all ages" or "for kids" while holding explicit content. The Miami one was for all ages knowing the vulgarity in the show. They deserve this.

This is equivalent of a movie theater showing a movie rated G and it being R rated.

Again, I see a line to be drawn for an in person show when it comes to the venue being responsible for the content and it's patrons in the same way as a bar having under 21 year olds. Fwiw, we agree that it's inappropriate across all mediums.

We agree more than we disagree, and I’ll look past you stating I think kids should attend drag shows…even though we both know you were dead wrong in making that assumption.

Regarding the ratings analogy, it’s a good one.

From the standpoint of a business owner looking to make a living on booking events at their venue, the onus is on them to accurately communicate what potential customers of all ages might be exposed to.

This protects customers from questionable content, and it protects businesses from government overstepping their bounds.

Liberal journalist Apologizes for promoting Florida Democrat 'grifter' against DeSantis: 'Screwed up royally'

Kasparian called out the 'mainstream media' for elevating Rebekah Jones' False Claims Against the Florida governor

"The Young Turks" co-host Ana Kasparian apologized to her far-left audience overnight for giving air time to the discredited Democratic activist and Ron DeSantis critic Rebekah Jones.

"The only person that should be held responsible for that is me. I'm the executive producer of the show and I screwed up royally," Kasparian admitted.

Ft Lauderdale is flooding and Ronny is in Ohio promoting his book. Mayor of Ft Lauderdale claims Desantis hasn’t even reached out to his office about it. I’m not a fan, but did not expect this level of incompetence.

Florida House PASSES six-week abortion ban backed by Ron DeSantis - after protesters sparked chaos by swarming the state capitol and throwing paper at lawmakers

The Florida state House voted overwhelmingly Thursday to outlaw abortions in the state after six weeks of pregnancy.

The vote was 70-40 in a body that skews heavily Republican.

The law essentially is a total ban on abortions as most women don't realize they're pregnant until after six weeks.

Florida's Republican Gov. Ron DeSantis supports the bill and has said he will sign it. It previously passed the Florida state Senate.
