Rick Barnes discussion (merged)

Sorry, hate to tell you, but you're only allowed to enjoy the season if it results in a championship. So, you're obligated to flip that smile to a frown. Pronto.

Thanks for setting me straight, Volprof!. I'm gnashing my teeth as I type to show that I have higher aspirations for UT basketball, and I hereby solemnly disavow any enjoyment I may have had of our previous basketball history, the entirety of which has been an abject failure.

'93 Lang Wiseman team beats Kentucky
Ron Slay/ Tony White years were fun to watch.
It's a shame Tyler Smith got in trouble over a little bit of weed. That was a fun team to watch.
Admirial, Bone, Grant teams were fun.

That's just off the top of my head.

I enjoy plenty of teams.

Just a shame that one of the top paid head coaches is known for sweet sixteens.

Rick Barnes has been to more NCAA tournaments and has 50 less tournament wins than Izzo.

I like Rick Barnes, just don't think it'll be anything better than sweet 16. Stats are on my side.

So we're allowed to enjoy a season in which we go 13-17 so long as the coach isn't paid too much?

Paying a coach top money and accepting mediocrity isn't frowning.

It's a legit conversation that is above your head. I like what Barnes has done. He can't do any better. Plenty of years to back up what I'm saying.

This conversation went above my head the moment I read about the Ron Slay / Tony White years :D

I never said too much. He's a top paid coach in his profession. If it was up to Rick Barnes he'd be coaching UCLA. His teams struggle when they get to the sweet 16. Plenty of proof behind that. If the Sweet 16 is your goal, that's awesome. Rick Barnes keeps Tennessee relevant in the media, polls, and recruiting. He's the Mark Richt of basketball. It's better than the dysfunction of Cuanzo Martin, Donnie Tyndall or Wade Houston, but it's nothing special. It's nothing to look forward to. You've already said that you like going to the Sweet 16. I'd prefer Tennessee Basketball strives for something more.

So my enjoyment of a year in which we beat Kansas, Texas, Alabama, and Duke en route to a Sweet Sixteen is an indication of my lower aspirations for UT basketball, but you can profess holding higher aspirations while enjoying a season in which our victory over Kentucky was one of only thirteen wins?

Just for the record, Ron Slay came twelve years and three coaches after Tony White graduated.
I was thinking Tony Harris and said White.
I forgot about Charles Hathaway. Bad Dude who played with Slay.

Also Vincent Yarbrough was on that team.

It was before the interwebs were popular but the rumor was he could grab stuff off the top of the backboard.

You're just trying to argue. I have no problem with what you enjoy. I'd just like to see more. There is nothing wrong with your enjoyment of sweet 16's or my intrigue to see something better than sweet 16's.

All that just to choke in the Sweet Sixteen and lose the clearest path we've ever had to a Final Four!

I think the goalposts have been thrown in the Tennessee River again.

You may have had too much to drink. It happens to the best of us. I never said anything along the lines of "All that to choke in the Sweet 16"

Maybe you're confusing me with another poster.

My first post in this thread was on page 82. I said something along the lines of lack of faith in Danny White to find a better coach.

I think I must have confused you with the poster who wrote:

Nice to know that 16th is good enough for you.

So you're admitting to making up the "All that to choke in the sweet 16" comment you made?

I never said anything about choking. Those are your words.

I've seen Rick Barnes results and will stand by the fact that his stats say he won't make it past the sweet 16.

If you like that. All good.

I'd like to test the waters. I believe in Danny White.

Also you cut out my post where I told you that Rick Barnes would rather be coaching UCLA. That's a fact. That's where he wanted to be. UCLA wouldn't pay his buyout.

Do you even know what the definition of “mediocrity” is?

Obviously you don’t.

"I trust Danny White"...... the Danny White who last year gave Coach Barnes a contract extension and a raise?

I'm unsure why you want White to "test the waters" when he clearly had enough confidence in keeping Barnes this time last year after we went out in the 2nd round. This year, we go to the Sweet Sixteen but you "trust Danny White."

You're delusional.

I assume he will still trust White when he gives Barnes a one year extension sometime this week. He only has 4 years left and it’s SOP here that a football or basketball coach never goes with less than 4 years on a contract.

Danny White is infallible only when he hires basketball coaches ex cathedra. He can make mistakes when extending the contracts of existing coaches.
