Kellie Harper discussion/debate thread [merged]

This is not a Happy Team, just observe their facial expressions and inter-actions whether on the floor or on the Bench. They are playing as individuals and not as a team, Think that it’s time for a meeting with the team on an individual basis by someone (no coaches) that D. White has confidence in to attempt to determine the mindset of the players and any team related issues including coaching conduct, substitution patterns, game strategy, etc. Time to find out what all the ingredients are in this Pot of Stew. Just don’t understand how KJP and staff can go another season. A coach is a coach and not the player’s mother. Can be friendly but not a friend. Willing to point out player’s mistakes such as poor decision making that results in a high number of turnovers and hold players responsible for not improving their skills such as passing, free throw shooting, not having good defensive position to prevent open drives down the lane for basically open layups, etc. A lot of this can be improved with adequate and demanding coaching. Is the team getting it??

I have admittedly seen more engaged groups; but, I think this team is middle of road in that regard.

Want to bring home Kara, or hire the Maryland coach?

I live about 50 miles from the Univ of Md. Freese has a sharp and sarcastic tongue to her. IMO, she would be a bad fit for the Lady Vols but she would most definitely get their attention for underperformance. Doesn’t have any difficulty pulling very good players from theWashington Metro Area which is very talented especially the private schools. I have no doubts that Lawson will be an excellent coach at the Div 1 level. This is a smart intelligent person. Might take her a couple of years to get the Lady Vol program back to the top level but IMO, she is very capable. Money will IMO move her. She has a lot more coaching experience than most people realize but Tn will not get her with “Kara, it’s time to come home”.

Isn't Kara like 20-3 at Duke this year?

I'm not following closely..

I like Freese because of that tongue. She certainly isn't Pat. But, she has an unique style that might gain some traction on South Carolina, LSU, Geno, etc.

Not that I think she'd come, actually, but I'm under the impression Frese is a nontstarter at Tennessee. She pulled some dirty stuff in recruiting against Tennessee, though for the life of me I can't remember the details. Some of it involved Candace Parker, and some of it was just general underhanded whatnot that got bad enough to warrant a response from our staff at the time. Anyway, it was enough to become rancorous, so much so that having her on a court literally named for Summitt would be ... well, it'd be hard to, ah, digest.

Reportable, Freese made the comment after MD beat Tn for first time in Knoxville “well I guess that they know who Maryland is now”.

I like KJH a bunch, however, like Holly, she has an offense stuck in the 70’s. Like Holly, KJH is stuck in the offense she learned from Pat. As I said before, she has a good defensive team which holds most teams below their average scoring. Our guards pass up open shots looking to pass it into the paint for possible scoring. In the game against Ole Miss, we had a chance to win the game if we had passed the ball to an open Puckett but chose to force the ball into Jackson who was covered by three players. For some reason we became so committed to getting the ball into a double, and sometimes triple, covered Jackson and did not exercise any other options. This was especially true in the two overtimes. We had a possible chance to be Stanford, however, we became committed to passing the ball into the paint and Stanford’s center had a block party. I know she had four fouls and we were trying to foul her out, however, when KJH saw it wasn't working, why didn't she try other options? It appears that KJH’s tool kit is lacking when it comes to offense.

Taken out of context.

This was during the NCAAT during Simmons’ senior year. Brenda had an excellent pre game speech about how everyone (re the media) already pencilled Tennessee into the Final Four, and no one’s talking about Maryland. But after this game (S16), everyone’s going to know your name. A fired up MD squad came out and upset the favored Tenn team. They played with such intensity that I remember everyone on Tenn playing scared (except for Simmons, of course).

Her speech wasn’t directed at Tennessee, but on a side note…THAT’S how you fire up you team!

If Danny White did such a thing, it would immediately be quantified as a witch hunt and it would turn into a "bitching session"...Bad Idea!

A better idea is for Kellie to hire a consultant who isn't afraid to tell her what she doesn't want to hear.

I can be there tomorrow!

Because one thing we need is more discussion of this. Maybe someone could start a thread?
It has, other than UConn nobody has been going
I know facts are long left behind in the post truth world, but this is not true. I go, as do about 7-8K others, even on the dreaded week night games. That's an attendance figure everyone in the SEC who isn't current LSU or SC would kill for. It's not the 10-12K the LVs were getting back in the day, but that happened before KJH got here.

I will say the lack of success will continue to drain attendance, but right now it's holding around probably an average of 7K nobodies.

Also, it's not attendance that really gets attention, it's donations. And ya'll thought it was Twitter likes!

I think a lot of fans have the idea that it may be a good idea to move on to another coach mainly because of what has happened in the four seasons Kellie has been in charge. All of her teams for the most part have been high turnover bad decision making teams. We seem to be really far away from getting to another level because only a few players this season are playing at a level high enough to win any game and no recruiting this season. We can sign a freshman who will be more than likely far less talented than most of the hoopgurlz top 100. I know there are always a few that don't make that list that should, but they are fairly thorough. You could say if Rickea had chosen to go somewhere else we could be a lot further down the line even in the SEC. So yes there are a lot of reasons to believe she is not the answer. What I am seeing out of the team now is what I saw when the season started. Were not better and that is reason enough to doubt she can do the job going forward.
