You can take my word as someone who is a 20 year veteran and has recruited the last 8 years...

Too many veterans have an overinflated expectation of their skills transferring from the .mil to civilian life. I see it almost weekly.

The reason we try to hire veterans is that it gives you a higher percentage of guys that are responsible and have a better work ethic than straight civilians.

I think it depends on the business. I worked in a union plant and a no bullsh!t response to some union workers was preferential to kissing asses.

Yeah well you are the boss. I made the decision a looooooong time ago to let somebody else do all the worrying and giving up on pay/vacations/etc... I saw how small business was when I was growing up in small retail. No thanks. I run the shutdown checklist and go home. If the airplane burns to the ground after that it ain't my problem.

Or perhaps you're being more judgemental and coming to assumptions when veterans apply? It seems like you're not applying those same standards across the board.

I don't disagree at all. But the military does like to give the impression military jobs are way more transferable than they are.

Mostly, former military are open to learn and 99% of the time will run circles around straight civilian employees. But just because you managed in the military does not automatically equate to management in the civilian world. There is a steep learning curve there.

And don't get me started on the military thinking they know **** all about Emergency Management... except the Coast Guard of all people.

The biggest issue I have had is what you just said. Yeah I understand you were a team leader combat engineer but that doesn't qualify you to start as a foreman. Learn the job and most likely you will be pretty quick.
