tl;dr
It's challenging at times for sure, but I'm very fortunate to be in a small, rural school, I think. Unfortunately, a lot of it (no matter where you are) is a giant exercise in PR with back patting, glad handing, and the like in terms of dealing with the public. I taught the parents of a lot of the kids I teach (no grandkids yet), and I'd have to say that the vast majority of these kids are an improvement on their parents. I get what you're saying, but I really think it depends on where you are. There are very good schools out there. And I want my students to respect authority, but you've always got 2-3 knucklehead teachers who use piss-poor judgment in dealing with issues and turn every situation into a major ordeal. Common sense, good judgment, and adaptability without compromising standards goes a long way in the education profession. I don't know how many more years I'll continue. I have my years in, but I still like what I do a lot and it's a few years before I can begin drawing SS. As long as I think my students benefit from my being there and as long as I'm enjoying it, I'll keep teaching.
