i for keeping kellie. did have 4 ast coaches during kellie playing days? how about parker years? abby would be a good ast coach. on jon harper did he play basketball or something else.? good husband would step aside if kellie bosses thinks he weak spot on coaching here.Seasons like these call for staff overhauls, to change things up in order to win....does she stay on board if changes are needed to be made? Becomes personal at this point if Danny says Jon won't be retained.
only people on here say jon needs to go anybody got newpaper or online saying thats the case?I was tipping into that direction earlier in talking about seasons like these lead over coaching staff overhauls. I assume Jon still reports to the AD and if he/White told Kellie that Jon is not being retained does she resign or try a year without him. Tough situation when your husband/wife is involved.
On paper, I agree that promoting Holly was a no brainer. She would provide continuity and as stated by others was already the de facto coach. There weren't any red flags until the last 3 years (and one of those last 3 years was actually a pretty good season until an early tournament upset loss). Of course, looking back we can all see that wasn't a fit but at the time, she looked like the right fit.turbo, I think your assessment is correct, but only in hindsight. At the actual time of the hire nearly everyone wanted to give Holly the job, most especially Pat. It turned out Holly just wasn't a good head coach and we all know that now. When she was hired, however, I don't think anyone knew what was to come.
Rickea, Walker and Horston played 36, 31, and 30 minutes. Jackson only came out for very short breathers, once for less than 2 minutes. Walker only came out bc of fouls, Horston to regroup her head. The box score, and simple facts, are your friends.
The only minutes problem I saw was whatever in the world made her limit Jill to 18 mins.
LOLOLOL yes, twitter likes are such very statistically significant research. For middle school. Don't know about others, but I expect a certain number of fans to be ready for change every hour of every day.
Kidding, right?. Probably not the best possible example of Tennessee fandom.
You guys have every right to your rage and burning mattresses and have some valid points. Maybe try using some of them.
There were moments in the 4th quarter where Puckett and Darby were more active in moving without the ball, especially Puckett when she had a shorter player on her and was creating mismatches. The problem is that the PG's don't have good vision as to what play is developing and were ignoring defensive mismatches and trying to force whatever play was drawn up. Happened at least 2-3 times, with Puckett and Hollingshead. Two things that concern me the most - recruiting and offensive philosophy. Check out the team pages on ESPN. UConn and others have 3 or more recruits committed for next year. UT has zero. Poaching through the portal does not create sustainable success.
Offensive philosophy - if you watched halftime of last night's game, they showed how Mulkey starts her offense on the left side of the floor and uses single and double screens to get a player an open look or a lane to the basket. We got burned on driving layups from that several times. Watching UConn, their players run a lot of motion without the ball and use slip screens to get better positioning and to make the defense switch to create mismatches. Our players get to a single spot and stay there. Only Houston and Jackson move to get better positioning. As one player sets the pick, all other offensive players should be moving, giving the point guard more than one option. Our offense is so predictable, a middle school team could defend it.
UT fans won't want to acknowledge it--but our program's slide really started during the last 10 or so years of PS's tenure. It went unnoticed because right in the middle of that stretch we landed Parker and Anoiske and with them won back-to-back titles. But in the last stretch of Pat's career, the women's game was changing and she was caught out by it. For something like the first 20 years of her time at UT, the women's game was all about defense and rebounding. Nobody was very good offensively; there were few gifted shooters or scorers. PS was fanatical about defense and rebounding--and so that emphasis dovetailed with the reality of game; and beyond that, she recruited extremely well, competition was limited, and so we rolled over everybody.
But when teams starting getting better offensively, we better coaches and better players started to emerge, we started to struggle. Team offense was not a PS forté. We still won the vast majority of our games, to be sure--but there were a LOT of ugly wins for a period of years--and if one looked closely, one could see problems on the horizon. We had some good offensive teams when we had some star offensive players, like Parker--but in the last stretch of PS's career we were not good offensively, by and large. During our Parker years, whenever PS took Parker out of the game, our offense fell apart--no star to bail us out. That is precisely why Geno gave us problems and beat PS in national title games. There were many years when our shooting and offense in general was quite poor. Go look back at the 2007 national title game between us and Rutgers. It was an absolutely awful offensive performance by both teams--we just ended up being less bad than Rutgers. And the problems that started to bedevil Summitt's teams have bedeviled us ever since. I adored PS and her legacy--a true legend--but in her last stretch the game was passing her by, which is understandable when you coach for 38 years. Happens to everybody with that kind of tenure.
You guys, don’t beat me up TOO bad about what I’m going to suggest!
IF Kellie doesn’t get it together and make a tournament run, (cause there’s still a chance), she’ll more than likely still get another year. Considering we don’t have any recruits and we’re not likely to strike gold again in the portal after the Jackson debacle, I really believe it’ll be Kellie’s final season here.
With that being said, I think we should offer the job to……..Candace Parker!!! (Runs and hides)…..I understand she hasn’t coached a lick of basketball in her life, but she could always surround herself with a great staff to help get her where she needs to be. Although I definitely think one of those people should be Andraya Carter and Tamika Cathchings in some capacity, they don’t necessarily have to be assistant coaches, but the basketball knowledge between those 2 alone would make me want them on my staff. Not to mention the recruiting I believe those 2 could do, hell maybe even bring Holly back, we know she was an amazing recruiter as well, cause I don’t know how in the hell she was landing too recruiting classes with the product on the floor.
I only say say this because I really believe we need a POLARIZING type hire at this point. I know a lot of people say we need to get away from the Lady Vol coaching tree, but I feel like Candace, if she’s even interested, would be a great hire. We all know, at the end of the day, you need TOP ELITE horses to win the race! I haven’t seen a team since Texas A&M win a championship without ELITE talent.
Candace, IMO, would be an IMMEDIATE elite recruiter for us, similar to Deion Sanders once he busted on the scene in college Football. The star power would attract ELITE talent, and the passion Candace has for Pat, her legacy, and Tennessee permeates through the TV, so I can only imagine the final, deal closing, pitches she’ll be able to deliver to young girls and parents.
We need an infusion of youthfulness to also bring back a new demographic of fans! The old guard would flock back, but we’ll also have new fan support for Candace’s name alone. Everybody would want to come and see the new show in town. I could even see NBA players starting to come to games or tweet at Tennessee players due to her connections to the NBA.
I know it’s a pipes dream and most likely won’t happen but I’d love to see if it could work!!!![]()
Big world of LV fans out there and not all of them reside here. You missed the point of all of those posts. This could be a case of the Baader-Meinhof complex, but I doubt it. When you scrub Lady Vol's social media over the year, the number of negative posts has increased exponentially as the losses have mounted. Last night, it reached a season-high. The number of negative posts was overwhelming. That IS statistically significant because it shows many, many folks have jumped off the Kellie train. Negativity builds and snowballs. When we see other people share a negative opinion publicly, it gives us "unconscious" permission to publicly hold and voice the same opinion. That's why negative statements often snowball via social media. Posters here can laugh and dismiss it, but I guarantee you Danny White is hearing/seeing it.. and this is my lane of research so I do know a little about what I'm talking about here.
Agreed, and it's how I felt about an untested Kara as well. We know they have the gravitas and the appeal to players from a recruitment perspective, but being the head coach is so much more than that. I'd love to see Candace develop as a coach if that were her calling, but more than likely we'd be looking elsewhere.Which is why I say no one, not the most beloved LVFL without successful P5 coaching experience need to apply. Let's not keep doing this over and over. No up and comers, no ex players just because, no Mid Major wonderkunds of the season. Don't know who this magical person willing to come on down is, but this time we have to swing for, and hit, a home run. If KJH doesn't work out, and I don't know for sure she won't, we need a reset.
I guess I am having a mental block on Marta. A sweet young lady and awesome person, but all I remember of her this year is when she stepped on the court, basically tried to do too much and was turn over after turn over. If she could be coached up to play within the flow of the game, could possibly be great. Not sure how she played for other teams (internationally maybe, but do remember she was considered very capable). And missing Marta..
