I'd bet that is a pretty misleading chart because the referenced profit only refers to the profit on the refined product - true but completely false - all a matter of context. It's the price of the oil - as set by the commodities market - that is the key factor. Bet the price of the oil delivered to the refiner being used as the cost of producing the refined products rather than the price seen between crude coming out of the ground and the refined product - very important semantics as is "oil company". Crude at $95/barrel vs say $60/barrel completely changes the equation - just not necessarily how many cents per gallon the refiner makes, but there's a hell of a lot more profit for somebody when crude is $95 rather than $60 per barrel. Maybe it's also a reason oil companies buy and sell crude used to refine - otherwise if they went end to end, there would be little reason for domestic crude to be priced at the global market rate.

When it comes down to arguments between government and oil on who's screwing the consumer, there are no innocents except the consumer.

I did some math today. On a 30 year mortgage, payments for a (now measly) $500k house at 2.9% were $2100/m. At the rate today, that's almost double at $3700 = $44k/yr. This is an emergency for the middle class.
