What’s the dumbest recruiting evaluation

Us passing on Tahj Boyd and then watching him tear it up at Clemson
By "us" you mean Kiffin? True dat. Gitshirting Bryce Petty in the same class was a two fer. He actually preferred Matt Simms. Now he did land Tyler Bray for us, so he wasn't a total chode.

Simms would prolly have been alright in Kiffin’s system because he need someone who wasn’t a true freshman post Crompton. Not sure how much better Bray’s career would have been under Kiffin

Better developed. Chaney was prone to passing tunnel vision and got away from the running game. Checking off to runs is vital in a quarterback's makeup. For grip it and rip it purposes Bray was great.

missed the mark on a lot of these guys but they probably wouldn’t have ever developed into what they are with our coaching at the time

The worse loss for Tennessee, in my opinion, was not recruiting Steve Spurrier. Not only was he a Heisman winning QB but he also really beat the crap out of us as a coach of Florida in 1990s and frankly, kept us from taking over the SEC East like we should have leading to Florida and Georgia passing us up for years as the power of the East.

Spurrier is our biggest miss based on the ramifications of the fall out from it.
Tennessee still ran the single wing and Spurrier was a passer. Neither party was interested because it was a bad fit. Spurrier didn’t hate Tennessee. The offenses were so different that it wouldn’t have worked.

On the plus side, my dad, who dreamed of being a HS football coach, came to UT (from NM) on the GI bill because they ran the single wing. He met my mom and here I am!

Pretty sure Muschamp wanted Hyatt badly but lost the recruiting battle.
He straight up told Hyatt that he wasn't physical enough.

And some people think coaches can never get things wrong haha.

"I'll trust a coaches evaluation over...."

Some people coach because that is literally the only job they can do!

Easy: Fulmer not offering Patrick Willis out of Bruceton TN Central. He only went on to be one of the finest linebackers on planet earth.

Kiffin running Tahj Boyd off and him ultimately leading the emergence of Clemson’s program will probably go down as the most consequential recruiting mistake in Tennessee history.

Yeah that hurts, hard to imagine what we could've accomplished with Higgins, Lawrence, Rodgers, and Etienne, and also Cade from the start would've been nice.
Only outlier was Cade. We lost him when it became apparent Butch was gone.

I dunno man. Tyler Bray has to be one of the luckiest guys on the planet.

He ended up on NFL rosters for what? 7 years or something? More than enough for a decent pension.

Who knows how much he made in salary -not much probably, but certainly more than he would have made just working a normal job.

Never actually had to play so he never got what little brain he has scrambled. I think he ended up throwing 1 career pass didn't he?

Pruitt telling Penix………we gots QB’s…….we don’t need you.

But then again we may still be stuck with Pruitt and might not have Hooker………..so Tennessee definitely won on that debacle.

Because he has PHYSICAL skills. “Luck” is what you make out of it. Lot of quarterbacks with advanced recognition but no arm would gladly trade places with him. For college purposes, he had us in games despite himself…that’s talent.

Are you saying that they wouldn't have landed Deshaun Watson or Trevor Lawrence without first having Boyd? That's a bit much. He had a good college career, but he wasn't drafted until the 6th round in 2014, and didn't have an NFL career to speak of. He probably isn't well-remembered outside of Clemson fans.

how about Fulmer and Randall Cobb?

Actually, despite my hatred for Fulmer, I got to give it up to him for this one:

He told Cobb he wasn’t playing QB even though Cobb wanted to. He said his future was at WR and Fulmer was honest with him and said he wasn’t going to get that chance at UT. Meanwhile UK played him as a freshman sparingly at WB, then converted him to a skill player after his freshman year anyways. I wouldn’t say UK lied since they did give him a chance at QB but it worked out for Cobb and UT wasn’t exactly hurting at WR in 2009-2010.

Clemson really wasn’t anything until 2011. By 2013 Clemson was rolling……they had gone 10-4, 11-2, and 11-2. Boyd’s 3800+ yards and 33 to 36 TD’s had a lot to do with that.

How many “top” recruits are going to go to Clemson and keep coming before they become the Clemson of today? Especially when they have a young HC who was basically the WR coach?

Dabo is a good coach no doubt…….however Clemson caught lightning in a bottle and that boosted everything. After Boyd, his stats and their winning……….recruits wanted to come.

No doubt a lot of that is on Dabo……..but without Boyd……..who knows what “would” have happened.

Unless Tahj Boyd changes Kiffin leaving USC or Dooley being hired, that recruiting decision had zero effect on Tennessee. Maybe a couple more wins in 2013 assuming Boyd stuck around with Butch.

QB wasn’t the problem from 2010-2013. It was Dooley
