At what point do we start talking buyout?

Heupel has exceeded expectations in every measurable way, and we are seeing a lot of signs that statistically point to him being an elite level coach. We could be currently seeing the “year 2 jump” which elite coaches usually display at their programs, and Heupel has already taken care of the “0-9 rule” by beating Florida this year. With all that being said, I’ve seen many Vol fans calling for him to get a raise (I agree on this point) and a few calling for a very hefty buyout to be added to his contract. Is it too early to be talking about that? If so, what will he have to do for us to get to that point? I know every Tennessee fan in their right mind is sold on Heupel, but after the last decade I just don’t know about locking him in with an absurd buyout yet — especially given how unpredictable our sport is. What are your thoughts?

Personally, I believe we let Danny White and the administration do what they’ve been doing…working directly with Coach Heupel to give him exactly what he needs to be successful. I have faith in Danny White to meet CJH’s expectations and keep him here for the foreseeable future in keeping with the good of the program.

He and the assistants just signed raises, extensions and new buyout. You want to do that again just a couple months later?

I really don’t care if he gets a high buyout. When coaches need to be fired that money always seems to appear.

I’m more concerned with the buyout if he left voluntarily. Need to make it painful for any school head hunting him.

If he leaves for another team I think I might pass out...
I don’t think he will. The only other program that even seems like a possibility appears to be Oklahoma, and as long as Bob Stoops remains involved in that athletic department they won’t come calling. Regardless, if the success continues, UT needs to be proactive in preventing any unforeseen things from happening.

People need to understand the situation about Kiffin leaving. He was stupid and immature and his wife wanted to be back in So Cal. CJH genuinely loves this place. He ain’t leaving for another college program. NFL maybe one day but that would mean he won championships here already. Either way, we good for a while.

This is different, we were giving pervious coaches extensions and big buyouts based on POTENTIAL for further improvement. Heupel has amply demonstrated excellence far ahead of what his most optimistic backers expected. We aren’t investing in what we MIGHT get, we are rewarding what we ALREADY GOT

No NFL or college team and fanbase will ever show him the love he will get from this fanbase

I’d like to think that Tennessee has welcomed CJH even more than his wildest dreams. He seems to realize the power and advantages that Volnation brings.

We are doing our part in spades. I hope CJH looked around on Sept 24th and thought to himself, “My Goodness, can it get any better than this?” And now that will be followed up by and even bigger, more awe inspiring extravaganza come this Saturday, and he is the star of the show.

Should coach be rewarded, a resounding YES.

Another part of me says, “You want to walk big boy, I dare you. Ask Lane about that.”

All that being said, I think coach is here to stay for the foreseeable future. Let the good times roll.

It’s Bama week. For goodness sake, take off the cup and let your nads breath.

Nobody is going to talk contracts till we near the end of the season. If we take one from Bama or gawjah and take care of the rest - or even just look like we are going to end up 10-2 THEN there WILL be talk about adjusting that pay package I gayrawntee you!

But anything before that, its too early.

Heupel and Danny White are tied to the hip. Neither are gonna leave each other. White and Heupel could get a lifetime contract if this trajectory continues along with Vitello staying the course with baseball.

right now he has a hefty buyout if we terminate, 100% of his salary. Is that what you're saying? He has a fairly low buyout if he leaves and his agent won't change that much on any future contract.
