Notes

One observation from the first practice of the year. Squirrel White is not only fast but he’s really quick. Seems to use his hands well getting off the line.

Freshman receiver Squirrel White is abusing freshman CBs. May be time to graduate.

As big as Bru McCoy is and he is big, Tillman is bigger having seen them stand side by side today. Walker Merrill drew praise from the coaches for his route running. Kelsey Pope was very demonstrative with his group.

As some of you have seen on Twitter, Squirrel White scorched Cam Miller in one on one work.

Kamal Hadden was very chatty and won several matchups during some one on one work.

Ohio State transfer Andre Turrentine and Georgia Tech transfer Wesley Walker are going to help this team in my opinion. They clearly have either experience or have played in a program like Ohio state and breads a certain mindset.

DBs Kamal Hadden and Andre Turrentine (Ohio St transfer) bickered over who would defend All-SEC WR Cedric Tillman in 1-on-1 drills. They're in position battles and wanted the test of the team's best wide receiver.

Christian Charles was in red today, but was going through every drill during individual and getting work in. Jaylen Wright was also in red, but later ditched the red jersey and went off to the side to do some work with a trainer.

The offensive line looked like this up front (l-to-r) JJ Crawford, Jerome Carvin, Cooper Mays, JaVontez Spraggins, Darnell Wight. The second group (l-to-r) was Gerald Mincey, Savion Herring, Addison Nichols, Ollie Lane and Dayne Davis. Jackson Lampley and Parker Ball were rotating in with the second team while Mincey and Crawford split first-team reps at left tackle.

At quarterback, of course it was the usual trio of Hendon Hooker, Joe Milton and Tayven Jackson – in that order. Because of the injury situation at running back, it was Jabari Small followed by Justin Williams-Thomas and Dylan Sampson – along with some walk-ons. Tight ends were Jacob Warren and Princeton Fant splitting first-team reps, followed by Miles Campbell and walk-ons.

At receiver, the first three up were Cedric Tillman, Ramel Keyton and Jalin Hyatt in the slot. The next three consisted of Jimmy Holiday and Walker Merrill on the outside with Jimmy Calloway in the slot. Bru McCoy was repping with the third team and looks like he’s got some work to do to get in football shape. Freshmen Chas Nimrod, Kaleb Webb and Squirrel White were all rotating in.

The defensive front started off with Byron Young, Omari Thomas, Bryson Eason and Tyler Baron while Roman Harrison, DJ Terry, Kurrott Garland and LaTrell Bumphus represented the second group. Elijah Simmons rotated in with those two groups while freshmen Tyree West, Jordan Phillips, Jayson Jenkins, James Pearce and Joshua Josephs all rotated around with the last two groups.

Jeremy Banks and Aaron Beasley were first two up from the middle layer of the defense while Juwan Mitchell and Solon Page followed. Freshman Elijah Herring and sophomore William Mohan manned the third-team on Monday.

In the secondary, let’s start with safety. The veteran duo of Jaylen McCollough and Trevon Flowers manned the first-team while Doneiko Slaughter and Andre Turrentine were up next. At cornerback, it was Warren Burrell and Brandon Turnage. It didn’t look like Charles got any reps in 11-on-11 (red jersey). At Star, Tamarion McDonald got the first look and was then followed by Wesley Walker.

Wesley Walker and Andre Turrentine both looked good from a physical standpoint. The Ohio State transfer was seen knocking down a couple of passes today while freshman Christian Harrison held his own a few times against Jalin Hyatt. Tyree West had a good day (albeit, no pads on) in 11-on-11.

Bru McCoy looks like he needs to get in better shape – and that will come in time. Hyatt looked like he was having a good day while we were out there and that’s no surprise considering all the work he put in on the jugs machine this offseason. Kaleb Webb ran crisp routes and made a couple of nice catches during routes on-air.

Among the players to pass the eye test: Tyler Baron looks stronger and leaner. LaTrell Bumphus has slimmed down. Wesley Walker looks like a guy who’s been in an ACC program for three years. Jaylen Wright has clearly added some bulk to his frame. Amari McNeill appears to have lost some weight.

Plenty of freshmen on defense look good: James Pearce Jr. and Joshua Josephs among them, as are Tyre West and Jourdan Thomas. Jayson Jenkins looks to have put on some good weight and looks better from even earlier in the summer. Lot of long arms on those defensive newcomers, too.

On offense, Cedric Tillman looks like a future NFL wide receiver and Bru McCoy looks like you’d expect – a big-bodied target akin to Tillman.

Dylan Sampson is quick. He caught a screen pass in team run and had some space and was down the field in a hurry. He’s not a big back by any stretch but he’s quick. He and Justin Williams-Thomas also had good runs during the team period.

As expected, freshman Cameron Miller was working with the safeties after working at wide receiver in the spring. The versatile athlete from Memphis had some growing pains in some early individual work but had some good reps in one-on-one release work against the wideouts. He looks slimmer compared to the spring but this is an important evaluation time for him coming up given he could potentially help elsewhere if needed.

Transfers Wesley Walker and Andre Turrentine, who appeared to have a pass breakup in team run but was flagged for pass interference, also worked with the safeties. Walker has plenty of experience from Georgia Tech, but there will still be an adjustment period for him. Tim Banks had him redo a pursuit/tackling drill after it wasn’t done like it was supposed to be.

The standout defensive backs during the releases portion were Kamal Hadden, who hyped himself up for the challenge with Cedric Tillman, along with Andre Turrentine and Trevon Flowers. Hadden tried to jump in for a rep against Tillman but Turrentine wouldn’t let him. The competition is on in the secondary.

Practice #1 was in full pads...I like it. When I played back in the stone ages we never had "shorts and shells", these young men do not need to be babied let them play old school.

GBO!

Not full pads. That is shells (helmets and shoulder pads). Difference from the shells you remember is they're wearing longer shorts that look a lot more like breeches (but without pads).

The first 3 or 4 days of fall camp, they're not allowed full pads; it's an adjusting period.
