What’s this NIL program offer that’s different from Spyre? What percentage of contributions go to the players?

Interesting story by Adam Sparks in today's KNS about Spyre Sports and how they helped Hooker and Tillman on a road trip to New York.

This is a grass roots effort by the players themselves. And they're sharing the funds equally.

It's almost like they just made themselves into a co-op. Making sure even the 3rd string walk-on offensive guard most no one ever heard of gets a little bit.

Spyre can keep hitting the mountaintops while this effort fills in the valleys a little bit. I can even envisage the big-$$ Spyre contract dudes joining this club but forgoing their share of the funds, so the guys without a Spyre contract get a little more.

Sounds great to me.

Go Vols!

This was my idea to begin with, but got called a "communist" OTOB. Gotta try and do what can be done to keep the rank and file satisfied.

Well, I do think it is important that we have both approaches: both Spyre and this co-op / club. If you don't hit the mountaintops, you don't get heights. But once you're hitting the heights, it's really nice to get some of the benefit trickling down to the rest of the crew as well.

When you first proposed it, did you include both capitalism AND socialism? They work best with a bit of each. Socialism by itself is usually a disaster.

My idea was simply to have a percentage of the NIL money go into a pot to be shared throughout the team. NIL is definitely going to cause some dissention in the ranks sooner or later. Imagine that OL protecting a million dollar QB's blindside and getting free Crystal's as payment. If you want to be a "team", than they should share in the success, IMO.

I've been on teams with haves and have-nots. And in my experience, it doesn't work the way your highlighted concerns are pointing.

If you get along as teammates, if you like each other, you tend not to blame each other for the one guy getting all the attention and support. You chalk it up to the system, or circumstances, or 'that's just how things go.' You don't start hating your buddy because of it, just because he scored. Plus, he usually IS the most talented on the team, or the QB, or the team captain, or all three, and so there's a bit of logic to it all too.

I don't think there will be any dissension from NIL, any more than there ever has been about unequal distribution of benefits. Which have always flowed (not just $$, but attention and academic support and dates and on and on and on).

Hey! Now wait-a-minute, doesn't that smack of Communism? Next thing you know, those boys are going to become Sino-Soviets.

Pardon me for having fun with this.

Communism, no. Because that's a political philosophy. This is more about socio-economics. So socialism.

Yes, a little bit of socialism. But not hardcore Soviet-style socialism, more like a good old fashioned Farmers' Co-op in your home town. Just helping each other through rough times, you know?

Don't mind you have fun with it, at all. :)

Then they be dadgum leftists. Hey! That might not be nice, so I'll just re-label our boys as Volists, yeah, that does smell better.

Will you come and mow my yard for free the rest of summer, this heat is just awful? I'll give you a free sandwich and provide the mower gas.

OK - I appreciate the effort and thought that the players put into this but here's where my brain goes --- we now will be paying to interact with the players? So where is the name, or image, or likeness coming from? If they want to have a shirt or something printed with all their names on it, I'll buy one or five. If they want to make and sell bobbleheads of each, I'll buy - the proceeds can then go to the 80 or so players that signed on to this... That's name, image or likeness...

...but this doesn't seem to fit the intent of NIL and even if it does, I'm a bit bothered by it.

Let’s be honest here, a lot of these players aren’t in college for the academics. Several will never use a degree even if they get one. Some players during the course of their careers will be injured possibly an injury that follows them for life. Everyone and I mean everyone associated with big time college football is getting paid well, why shouldn’t player enjoy some of that money?

How many college students are out in the heat putting their life and limbs on the line while other make money off of them?

This! Can my son no longer get a player’s autograph after a game, unless I flash my club card?
