War in Ukraine

It is good to get to test our weapons on live Russian equipment without having to put any boots on the ground. The Javelin and stinger missiles have proven very effective. Would work just as well blowing up Chinese junk too. Also, the "Neptune" missile is just a slightly modified U.S. made Harpoon missile. It has sent some Russian battle ships straight to the bottom, including one of their best. The U.S. now has even better updated versions of the Harpoon. This is a war that we have learned just how much further along we are than one of our adversaries.
Best live fire test you could ever perform! And I can assure you the equipment contractors are getting all kinds of feedback on how well the equipment does or doesn’t perform as well as the ops analysis people in validating their Russian battle protocol models.

Did you guys know that the russians are stuck using chinese made unscrambled communications gear? So basically, every communication on the field and abroad is being intercepted.

The Russians are apparently so far behind that GPS receivers have been found taped in cockpits of downed Russian planes. It's also interesting that Russia has probably been jamming GPS signals. From the article, you almost wonder if the two US Army RC-12 Guardrails cruising around daily over Lithuania are looking into that among other things.

I didn’t read the link but I don’t get this. The Russian system is GLONASS thus the equipment Ukraine is using is largely GLONASS also. Most commercial units are dual mode and will navigate from either GPS or GLONASS. If they are seeing commercial/civilian GPS receivers taped in aircraft I’d guess those would use either system so my take would be they don’t trust GLONASS? Plus the GPS in an aircraft is more than just “where am I” even if they aren’t tied into the autopilots they have more sophisticated flight path modes than the average hiking hand held unit.

Hey @volgr seems you left. Sad.

Well, if you come back, comrade, you can watch your commie buddies cooking off in their tanks. That Javelin is a b*tch ain't she? Getting fried alive in their tanks is a punishment well-deserved for every one of these commies.

I especially enjoy the part where the one tank - seeing all his buddies getting blasted to bits - starts hauling ass straight ahead right into the wasp nest at 2:40 - 2:53 ... only to be greeted head on with a Javelin that fries the whole tank crew into crispy critters!

Awww, man... it's the simple things in life, ain't it?

Probably a lot of guys all around the world rethinking a career in the Armor Branch.

There are rumors that the Russian army has acquired an iPhone. It’s on now.

It's a difference without much distinction.

If nukes start flying, it doesn't matter what you call it.

The interesting thing about nuclear war or MAD is the result. There's no future in it for people making up the MIC - defense contractors, military, politicians, and other upper corporate crust with their hands in the pie; and whoever goes in the coffin with the most money and stuff still isn't a winner. You have to think that people who want to go on skimming on defense spending would see nuclear war as an abomination - something to be avoided. What's the purpose of having all the good stuff if you can't enjoy it? I think that's what keeps the rest of us safe.

Ukrainian Proving Grounds - a lot of bang for the buck, and you don't have to fight environmentalists and regulators. Besides with the language barriers etc, if Ukrainians can be effective with weapons, there just a chance our new wave of woke warriors might stand a chance at blowing up an enemy rather than themselves.

Apparently our weapons are going through poland to get to Ukraine but they're being blown up before they get there. Russia is going to win, stop wasting money

You're one of the only four people on this board who would believe that. The other three are Curly, Larry and Moe.

They only care about themselves and the right here right now.

I'll have to admit I didn't know the Russians used a different system. I read an article about the GPS taped in Su-34 cockpits last night - not sure if it was the same that utvolpj and I posted here or not. What struck me is that the Su-34 is apparently still considered an up to date Russian plane. Maybe their aircraft really aren't any more sophisticated or better maintained than their other military equipment? It seems really strange. I remember stories from long ago that some of our first missile detection equipment was not a lot more than off the shelf traffic radar detectors. Maybe we've got jammers deployed in Ukraine that mess with their normal GPS systems? But that would apparently defeat what's in Ukrainian aircraft, too. Maybe they are intercepting coordinates from our systems and are using commercial units to get close. It's all weird, and news sources never seem to have much depth.
