The Official Tennessee Titans thread IV

Lack of money. We overpaid Dupree. We resigned Landry, so he’s not playing for rookie money. And we have to resign Simmons and Brown next season.

I’d love it if we could move Tannehill for Mayfield and spend some money to improve this roster. Trade for Collins with Dallas. Pick WR in the 1st round. Go after one of these pass rushers in free agency
Why would you want Mayfield?

Salary cap. He’s not elite. He’s probably above average. And we could afford to build a solid team around him

I’ll add this too: like Tannehill he’s played at an elite level when he’s had good coaching.

But the biggest thing is he is far cheaper.

We already have a solid team. I agree Tannehill isn’t going to bring us a ring, but I’m not sure we could add enough to win anything with a quarterback who is historically bad in the clutch.

If we get 2020 Baker Mayfield, that’s = in my mind to Tannehill but a lot cheaper. And 2020 Mayfield/Tannehill is a lot like Matthew Stafford.

Thea real advantage is 2 fold. One, we need cap space to resign Brown and Simmons in 2023. Mayfield gives us that.

We need cap space to improve the roster. I’d agree we had a good team last season but this team has way too many gaps to fill in the draft.

We are unlikely to bring in 3 starting offensive linemen, a starting corner (maybe not needed if Farley is healthy), and a number 2 WR.

But no, I can’t call a team solid that is down 3 starting linemen, a starting CB, and without a legit number 2 wr.

The second reason to make the deal is he’s still young with a high ceiling. Given his 2020 play, he could still be an elite QB and has a lot more time left than Tannehill and probably for less money

Edit: I should’ve said 2 linemen. I forgot we resigned our center. But given his age and Lawen’s injuries I’m not feeling great about either

And now all of that was for nothing because the Browns have Watson

I’m not really so sure it worked between those two teams cap space-wise to begin with.

I’m not sure the numbers fully work out without the Browns having to gut more players to make the appropriate amount of cap room.

Not to mention, it still would leave the Titans with a dead cap hit of $28 mil, and while ideally only open up like $10 mil for the Titans, it’d likely be lower as the Titans would probably need to willingly also offer to pay a portion of Tannehill’s salary next year to facilitate the trade. I’m not sure that would leave the Titans with enough room in the end either.

I imagine anytime a big name like that is moved, a contract has already been worked out. Given he only made his bonus money last season, I’m assuming he’s open to a reasonable deal

I was making an edit to the first post around the timeframe in which you were responding:

Part of that answer may be trading back and the other part may be restructuring Tannehill. It’ll be interesting. We are close to being really good but close to being really really bad too

100% agree. It is on a razor's edge IMO.

Yeah we were good last year but we have so many holes to fill and no money to spend. Being good next season probably depends on last year’s draft class to fill our corner and OL needs, and a good draft this season.

Depending on 1st or 2nd year guys who have yet to flash at multiple positions is scary.

Fat Randy staying on a two year deal and I'm okay with it. He has been our most consistent kicker since Succop and I didn't realize it but his FG percentage is only 1.8% off of Bironas (85.7% vs 83.9%) who I think we can all agree was the team's best kicker.

Kern agreed to a rework of his deal to give cap space, so all three specialists are back. Good performers overall.

D bailed them out of a bunch of games last season and that is one key injury away from being exploited to flip the script to bad. So I agree on the progress of the last draft class and this one to get back to the playoffs. Signing Hooper for TE is a decent transition move. Good performer, but no upside, just a dependable target occasionally. It might help remove the obvious telegraphing of play calls by sending in one trick ponies at the position like they've done for the past few years.

You need good G's if you have an aging plow horse at C. All while still having a hole to fill at RT and a hope that Lewan can play decently on the other side. If that group doesn't get better, Tannehill doesn't get much better no matter who they add at WR.

Not feeling all warm and comfy so far although I think J-Rob is probably doing the best he can with the circumstances.

Sort of disagree on Bullock. He’s terrible enough from over 50 yards that the team didn’t even consider it on multiple occasions (the last playoff game included)…and that ability is sort of a must have for successful teams in the NFL.

Yeah, given aging and injuries the offensive line is feeling like it could be really, really bad. Mixed with no WR depth and a QB who regressed last year (due to lack of targets, new OC, who knows) it’s concerning.

I’m on the fence with J-Rob. He’s had two elite draft classes and some terrible draft classes. 2016 (Conklin, Henry, and Byard) and 2019 (Simmons, Brown, Davis, Hooker, Long) are some amazing classes. 2019 may be the best in team history.

But the Wilson blunder in 2020 hurt a lot, looks like we may have missed on another tackle in 2021, and idk if Farley will bounce back from injury and be the elite guy he’s capable of like Simmons did for us.

The recent draft issues mixed with the Dupree signing and failed Julio trade (every though I like it at the time), especially given how often we see talented guys like Cooper go for late round picks, I’m very on the fence about J Rob.

We went from a team that was elite to a team that may miss the playoffs because of two bad moves and two draft classes very fast.

Need to draft wide receivers and offensive lineman that’s stating the obvious though

We need to find 4 starters (LG, RT, WR, CB) and we don't have a 2nd round pick. It's a rough spot.

If we got OT or CB in the first round it'll tell us exactly how they feel about last year's class.

I agree. It's obvious that in theory that WR should be in the first. But with the issues, who really knows.

I should have said doing his best for the current situation he helped create. The Wilson pick was really bad. The Farley pick was really risky, did not care for it personally. The big need was still there for RT and TE at that time. But will see how it works out this season.

RB looks OK now with the Hilliard signing.

Agreed. I think he hit once on an elite injured player who fell to him because of injury (Simmons) and thought he could do it again. I don’t think it’s bad from a process standpoint but after missing in the first last year it added pressure to the Farley pick and then he may have missed in the second round too after going for an OT from a smaller school who wasn’t ready a year ago.

It’s a tough spot and I’m curious how he handles it
