Growing up a Vol in Memphis I hated Memphis State and rooted against them most of the time. Exceptions were when Dockery was the football coach, Larry Finch was the basketball coach and when Penny played. I have always been a Penny fan.

I was a big fan of Penny the player growing up. Even had his shoes.

Mainly because Memphis State University (or <nearly anything> State University) is generally perceived as a directional. They are University of Memphis now, and they know that “Memphis State” is generally used as mockery now.

Of course, I still call them Tiger High, so there’s that.
