‘23 CA QB Nicholaus Iamaleava (Tennessee)

how can any of us possibly know that? no college player is worth more than $50-$100k. ridiculous.
But college coaches are worth $10mm?

This makes no sense.

Gather the ratio of HC:Roster using the closest thing to a free market there is when dealing with hundreds of millions...the NFL. Now, coaches average maybe 7 or 8mm. Rosters average about $200mm. So we're talking 25x+ the value of their HC.

To say a college player could only be worth 100k (or 8.5mm for a whole roster) is putting the ratio at about 1:1. Or about 4% of what the free-ish market sets it at.

"don't need millions" o_O

nobody needs millions... but if the market dictates you can make millions instead of a dead-end blue-collar salary where you lease your house, car, and toys from a bank every month, you'd be an absolute fool not to take it...

"HS players" is massive undersale of the economic boon some of these kids can bring to programs.... especially quarterbacks. There's what? About 20 5* players per year... up to 2 of those are quarterbacks every year.... imagine if there were only 2 people in the country that could do your current job as well as you could... what would your salary be? Not sure why people get all bent out of shape that the very tip top-end of sports talent in this country make more money than their own careers...

I don't lie this conversation at all.

But.we're all operating under the same circumstances so if this is the "can't say no,gotta have" kid then you do what you have to,and get him.

But I hate this whole conversation.

Most of my life. I'm sure it's gotten better. But growing up and going to UT up through the 2000s, lots of ugly or at least bleh areas. I grew up in a very bleh area myself. Billboards everywhere, fast food strips everywhere, just not attractive to outsiders. But again, why I said most. Every area of knox has a few nice areas. But if you drive a few miles from UT in multiple directions, it can be pretty...unattractive. Just saying...if you're trying to sell someone on NYC, you don't take em across a bridge.
You been to Tuscaloosa Athens auburn?

If a player could bring Tennessee it's first Heisman winner and another national title, 8 mil would be absolute chump change iyam.
If that is the case, he needs to go to Oregon because ESPN will do everything within their power to ensure he never wins a Heisman at UT.

I’ve said this before, but the NFL is not college.

Any QB in the NFL has proved a lot more than any HS QB. And, as far as I can tell, the only college head coach that makes $10M is the literal greatest to ever do it (and it’s not even particularly close).

Also, college head coaches have a brutal job, from performance expectations on the field, to managing tens of employees, to babysitting 100 college kids, to having to text and call 100+ more high school kids nonstop 365 days a year and fly all over kingdom come during the off-season to chat up their mommas and high school coaches…

If anything, the fact that we are even talking about Hendon Hooker (who I love but is probably not an NFL QB — hope he proves me wrong) possibly making $1 million to play at UT next year just shows that any value these guys have is fully built on the fans’ love for the institutions/brands of these schools. To your point about relative value of coaches and players — if you had to pick one, would you rather have Hooker or Heupel? What about Hooker or Saban?

Eh… not apples to apples at all.

The average NFL player is much better at his job than the average college player. The same is not true of coaches (different skill sets, and maybe you could say overall NFL coaches are a little better at their jobs, but nothing like the disparity among players).

Also, demands on NFL players are greater than demands on college players, while demands on college coaches (specifically, recruiting, but also more generally managing a program and a roster of 100+ college kids and making sure they go to class, stay out of trouble, etc.) are greater than demands on NFL coaches.
